We play either .05/.10 cash games, or tourneys with a $10 buy-in. Most of those who play are my son's friends, or young parents without a lot of disposable cash. For most games, we limit losses to $20/night. I got this Showdown set from thepokerstore.com. I like that there are no dollar signs, so they work for tourneys, or for cash (5 is nickel, 25 is quarter, 100 is dollar, etc.

I bought a 600 chip set, and I was able to choose the denom breakdown. I could run a tourney starting with 2000 chips (blinds starting at 5/10) for up to 20 players. I may add 100 chips later, but these will cover me well for now. I could also handle a .25/.50 game with 5 or 6 players, I believe, as 25's, 100's, and 500's total $350.

The feel comparable to the cheap dice set you can buy at Target, but look higher end. The denominations make it much easier for new players to know how to match bets. No more "just throw in two blues and a red, and take your white back"! :D

You'll be surprised how often that happens even with denominated chips :).

Truth.

Related tale: I played in a tourney at a casino a few weeks ago. I've only played in a couple casino tourneys, and this was my first time at this particular joint. The chips didn't have denominations, and were not standard colors (IIRC, blues were 25, and greens were 100). I declared a raise, but no amount, on the third hand, and threw in what I thought was two 100's, but I got the colors confused and threw out two 25's, which was the BB amount. The SB threw a huge fit about it, so I only got to min raise. Of course, the SB called with K8 and caught two pair against my KA, and I lost a bunch of chips. I learned my lesson.

I see you're in Iowa, Riverside by chance?

I played there once a few years back. This one was at Rhythm City in Bettendorf. I'm about an hour from Riverside, and 90 minutes from RC.

Ah, my wife has family near Cedar Rapids, I've played at Riverside on such occasions and I remember they didn't have denominated chips for their tournament.

I don't recall either way, but I do know that they are sister casinos.

Pretty cool set and they do look better then the dice chips even though they are basically the same.

You can always upgrade to a better set should you choose to do that in the future.

I'd like to try some high end chips sometime, but I can't justify dropping $800 on a set of Paulsons in order to win $50 once a quarter at a cheap folding table. Maybe I should become a better poker player? :D

I grew up in Moline and get back to the Quad Cities occasionally to visit family. Disappointing the Rhythm City chips in Bettendorf are like that. Have you tried Jumer’s across the river? I have not been there to play poker but I’m guessing it may be OK. The casino itself is pretty nice.

I have not been to Jumer's. It really surprised me that a decent place like that didn't have demons on the chips, especially since they had labels. One would think they just go ahead and get some numbers printed on the labels.

Do they not want values on them so people don’t think they are worth anything?

Possibly. Or maybe so they can use them for different values if they need to.
