More lower denoms or more higher denoms (1 Viewer)

St. @bergs saeth “Nobody wants to play cash with just a few chips. Just feels shitty.” No go forth and have some stacks o’ fracs.

I give all of my fracs and singles out early in the game. Each player will get a barrel.

This gets everyone on the table a healthy stack from the start. Then as the game goes, I color them up here and there as rebuys happen etc.

This allows more color, more chips, more degen, more fun. It multiplies all of it.

Anyone who wants LESS chips on POKER CHIP forum is a weirdo. That person probably also likes:
- Less horsepower
- well done steaks
- and prefers Tina over Paul & Son
(The last one sounds weird, and only works on PCF)

I feel like the moar crowd are a bunch of hobby-happy geeks. They inevitably have their names on their chips with matching felts, cut cards, dealer buttons, showem chips, rabbit hunting chips, etc. Nothing wrong with that, in fact PCF is all about that, but having fun with your hobby doesn’t necessarily mean good poker.

One rack of quarters is perfect for my 7-8 handed NLHE game. I wouldn’t argue with an extra barrel if there were 9 players. But multiple racks? I don’t think it’s necessary and it can absolutely slow down the game, especially for all-in situations and cash outs.
I reject the idea that more chips are needed to prevent people from having to make change. An hour in the game, somebody will always be out of fracs regardless of whether you started with 10 per person or 30 per person.
Do more chips encourage looser betting? I don’t know. I know it doesn’t for me. When I’m deciding how much to bet, the denominations I have in front of me are either the last consideration or more likely no consideration.
I know I’m sounding like some kind of poker snob dick. I’m not. I play for fun, I’m never the best player at the table, and when I host I tend to play crappier because it’s good for the game. But I think lots of fracs and lots of $1s is silly - to each their own.

My ideal breakdown for an 8-person .25/.50 NLHE game?
.25 x 100
1.00 x 160
5.00 x 300
And then enough $20/$25s in case things get crazy.

I know I am in the minority here, but this is what I do and I never had any problems.

Whatever my lowest chip is (usually it is small blind) my normal buy in stack includes a barrel of them. Everyone starts with 20 of them. Nobody ever needs change until they need to rebuy, and rebuys are bigger chips only. I found by starting out like this there is always plenty of every denomination needed for the game to go smoothly all night.

My 25¢/50¢ table is $50 max and people get
20 x 25¢
20 x $1
5 x $5

and rebuys are all $5 chips. Puts plenty out there, people only need change when they rebuy, everything just works.
Well done thou good and faithful servant

Both of my sets have non-optimal breakdowns because I wanted more chip or denominations (colours) on the table. My recreational players like to limp a lot too. For .10 (or .25) / .25 blinds, here are some $40 starting stack examples:

Casino Nacional:

.05 x 20
.25 x 40
$1 x 29

Club 72:

.25 x 20
$1 x 20
$5 x 3

Deciding on the Club 72 breakdown was tough because I had to hold back on the $1s in order to ensure $5s got on the table. First world chipper problems, yo. Since we have mostly been playing spread limit this isn't an issue anymore.

Cashing out is slower, but I just might enjoy counting/stacking/fondling chips more than actually playing poker...

... What if it's not my name that I put on my matching chips, felt, cut cards, dealer buttons, show-me chips, and rabbit hunting chips? Can I still be a hobby-happy geek? :D
