I went through some moving boxes in my garage and noticed that some of my CPC chips had mold on them (yes, I know the garage is not the best storage for chips.) What is the best method of removing it without damaging them?

I would suggest testing some clear vinegar on one chip for an hour or so and check the results. It should be mild enough to kill the mold/mildew without damaging the chip.

I have done this with some funky flooded chips with good results but have never tried on CPC.

You may just try some dawn mixed with warm water followed by a thorough dry using some desiccant in a closed container. Theoretically this will kill the mold as well.

Never tried this approach myself though.

What looks like mold might not be mold. CPC (and ASM before them) use brass to add weight to a chip, and what you see might not be mold but tarnish on the brass.

A gentle cleaning and oiling might bring them right back to where they were. I know if my older ASM chips (my tournament set... as I don't really host tournaments anymore) will look and feel a bit gritty from neglect, but just shuffling a barrel of those chips for a few minutes will bring them back to life.

Mold / Mould is not always the same ; )

If the garage is the only place you can store your chips, try to keep them in a closed container with some silica gel pads in it to prevent too much humidity.

After reading your post’s title I was thinking you wanted to take the hats and canes off a Paulson. :ROFLMAO:

I like the scrubbing with magic eraser/vinegar/ hydrogen peroxide ideas.

But I would *caution* against submerging inlaid ASM/CPC's in any liquid. If that liquid gets to the underlying inlay ... you have a whole new, permanent problem.

Take a photo and we can answer this question more precisely. It is possible that this is not mold at all, but simply darkening of the brass.
Definitely mold.

Yuck!!!

From the photos, this only looks like it's on the surface of the chip. A gentle cleaning should take care of that.

It's not as easy as being able to ultrasonic Paulsons, but if I have to clean my ASM and CPC chips, I use non-oxy dish soap (Dawn) and a soft bristle dish brush. I fill a sink with lukewarm water and a squirt of soap and dunk a barrel in the solution. I'll scrub the edges as a barrel with the brush then drop them all in the sink. I'll pick up each chip and gently scrub each face with the brush with the chip in the palm of my hand. A rinse, air dry on an old beach towel and finished with a gentle oiling of the edges is what I then finish with before re-racking and getting them back in play.

I haven't dealt with mold before, but it does look like it's pretty light on your chips. Hopefully a scrub (and removing them from the garage!  ) should take care of things.

As a P.S. it looks like the cardboard boxes helped capture moisture and then promote the mold growth. Throw out those boxes for sure and store the chips in racks of whatever your preference might be. Much less likely to hold onto moisture that could harbor mold spores.

Looks pretty light for sure. I’d be shocked if it didn’t come off with a gentle cleaning with Dawn, as others have said.

Might be time to bring them inside, if possible!
