New pictures of edges added to further help the clay vs. plastic discussion. If you love hot stamps check this set of 275 chips out. These are from the Opera House Casino in Las Vegas. The casino closed in 2015 after being open for 40 years. They are Mint ! The colors are great and would really pop with some oil. The set is has 154 - $5 , 93- $25, and 28 - $100. These are clay chips with the unicorn mold. They are in excellent shape ! paypal FF

I had no idea compressed clay chips were ever made on the unicorn mold. These do not look like injection molded plastic. I wonder who made them?

They are not plastic, but I do not know who made them. I was told Paulson has this mold , but does not use it often.

I always thought the Unicorn mold was a plastic injection mold that ended up at GOCC.

Compression molded clay seems odd for this. Could you post a video of the chips? Maybe weigh some barrels and do some shuffling? You can't blame folks for being a little curious/unsure of this set.

I don't think you're correct regarding them being clay chips. I have never seen 'real clay' chips on this mold. Chipco had this mold for a while. Definitely wasn't clay when they were using it, still decent for cheap chips though.

Unicorns don't have square edges like this. I think @41Pickup knows clay, and I think these are real clay.

I was about to correct the OP, but after your comment, I looked closer and I tend to agree with you...

I've never heard of or seen clay chips on the unicorn mold. I would accept the opinion of someone that knows real clay chips and isn't the seller. Up to the seller and buyer at this point. Great deal if I'm wrong.

Also, the Chipco unicorns aren't bad, could be mistaken for clay just lighter.

I have an email into Robert Eisenstadt (guy who wrote the chip mold bible referenced above) inquiring about the Unicorn mold on clay chips. I certainly wouldn't want to discount the opinion of an experienced chipper like @41Pickup, so maybe I can get us more information. Robert has been responsive to me in the past

New better Pics just uploaded. There is no doubt they are clay. Mint Hot stamps from a real Vegas casino for $1 a chip is a deal

I don't see an injection dimple anywhere. Look like clay to me....but I'm no expert. Perhaps BGinGA or the good Dr. will chime in....or better yet Mr. Eisenstadt himself.

To add to this point, Robert Eisenstadt (noted above) came back with this response.

I'm sure there are other experts who may know this, but the person who is pretty much the authority on chip molds believes there are compression molded chips with the unicorn mold. At a minimum, it's another data point from a reputable source, and I believe more data is always helpful.

@41Pickup, I'm sorry if it seemed like folks were crapping on your thread. This just raised an interesting question about unicorn mold chips (which I always discounted as exclusively plastic based on prior threads over the years, but obviously may be reconsidering).

UPDATE: After consulting with David Spragg (CPC) and Jim Blanchard (ASM), Robert appears to be questioning his observation that there are compression molded unicorn chips.

The new pics do look legit. I wish it was a breakdown I could use.

I would like samples though (if that's somehow possible)

I've also got some unicorn mold frac's with no injection dimples. I assumed they were a plastic composite material, but some of them have very sharp edges & others have flea bites. Don't want to hijack @41Pickup 's thread, but would be happy to post pics. They are the .50 chips from here...

^^^^

I stand corrected - you can definitely see the lathe markings on some of these.

Wow! Now the real question... who made them???????

These are so interesting. Also in for a sample set please.
