Materials for table build in australia (1 Viewer)

I was able to source everything from Australia without much of a problem, except to my wallet of course. I kept a folder with receipts for everything that I bought to make my tables, I will have a dig through my files on the weekend and see if I can find it for you.

I made my tables in a hurry without having played on any good quality homemade tables before so I made some decisions that I now regret. I will eventually get rid of the two I made and make the next two juuuuust right. I have been saying this for 5 years though. One day I will get around to it.

I didn't start building until I had all the supplies at home ready to go as I didn't want to be held up during the build process waiting for something to arrive. Unfortunately for me, while I was waiting for the foam to arrive, an old incandescent light bulb in my storage room blew and dropped hot glass onto my folded piece of black SSC. The glass burnt holes right through multiple layers of the cloth! I decided to go with red on second attempt.

First table I made was a behemoth tournament table. Full size 2400 x 1200 mm (94x47"). Seats 10 comfortably but for some reason I put in 8 cup holders in the rail. Raised 150 mm (6") black vinyl rail with HD foam. Red SSC over closed cell foam.

I started playing fewer tournaments shortly after finishing the oval table and scooping pots/cards with 6 players on the huge oval got tiresome very quickly. I decided to build a new table using left overs from the first table. There was JUSTTTT enough area on the black SSC without burn holes to cover a small round surface so I decided on a cosy 1200 mm round table for my 6 max cash game. The only new thing I bought was some gaming suede for the rail from the US (wanted to see how it was compared to vinyl) and some more cup holders.

From memory (2013):
  • Speed cloth and stainless steel cup folders from Aussie online poker store, there are a couple to choose from. Got them delivered.
  • Closed cell foam for the playing surface from pjbowers.com.au. Got it delivered.
  • Open cell foam for the rail from dymanfoams.com.au, I picked this up.
  • Vinyl for one table from Spotlight, got it during a sale so it was a good price and quality was surprisingly excellent. One huge piece.
  • Gaming suede for another table from the US, picked this up when there for work.
  • Plywood from specialty plywood supplier in Brisbane, usually cheaper and much better quality than Bunnings. Have to pickup.
  • Iron on edge banding from another specialty wood supplier, excellent stuff

What kind of table are you making? What supplies do you already have? What tools are you going to use?

thanks very much for the info @Señor Tony

I’m planning on making a basic 10 man table with foldable legs, basically as close to a chanman style as I can get.

I do plan on converting it to a solid base later, but for now I don’t have the space for it to be out permanently.

My dad is a carpenter by trade so he will be doing the building and tool supplying, I’ll be “project managing” lol.

I’ve already got a custom felt on the way from tchan, so that’s taken care of. But other than that I’ve got nothing else yet.

I guess I need to buy plywood, vinyl, both table and rail foam and legs.

If you find a pair of folding legs that don't wobble let me know. I have tried the standard Bunnings ones but they had too much play in them for my liking.

If you are putting cup holders in the rail, think carefully about placement. It may be better to *not* put two at the apex of the curve at either end. Use the extreme points instead as the centre between two holders.

(I actually prefer no cup holders at all, or else removable ones that slide under the rail.)

Sorry I cant be of any help.
I'm still slumming it on a dinner table, although the PCF topper should arrive soon to make it a bit better.
I also have insufficient space for a second table, that's why I love the idea of a solid permanent poker table, with a dinner table cover.
I'm watching this thread with interest. Good luck.

I really hate cup holders, but most of my players are complete idiots. Spillages are a certainty, so I will have to include the cup holders somehow I think.

Yep, placement at the apex is one of many decisions I made which I regret!

I like in rail cupholders, saved me from many a spills. Haven't tried under rail cupholders but will buy some to try out before bulding my next gen of tables.

I’m no help sorry. I have 3 shoddy tables that I’ve been given and still haven’t fixed any of them up yet.

Gl with your build.

I'm in the same boat as Stocky, I'm still figuring this out for myself. I have a 1200mm round table similar to Tony's and have plans to add a padded rail much like that but haven't gotten around to it. +1 for cup holders sliding under the rail!

Good luck with the build. I had my main table built for me by a carpenter and an upholsterer that works/contracts for me so I'm no help either.

I do know that the folding legs were originally attached to a Mighty Lite brand folding table and have been rock solid going on 10 years now.

Hi mate,

My father-in-law made mine. I am not sure where the materials came from, but I did get the SSC from Australia.

I will love to know where in Australia we can get a pedestal with 4 claw feet if anyone knows.

GL with the build mate.

Adam

Cant really help Mike, got my table online years ago had to organise transport and delivery across the country. Finally found a furniture laden truck bound to Freo from Sydney who took on the extra load.
I went for a 10 man which doubles up as a dining table (the wife was happy). The pedestal with the claws i'm sure i saw a site that was selling them alone somewhere, also a while back.

Hey mate
Here's what I use:

Bunnings for ply. 12mm non structural 1220x 2440. $35 a sheet

Daleys upholstery for all foam and vinyl

I have my own roll of casino cloth that I use for custom printing.

eBay or gumtree for dining tables for the pedestal legs.

Cheers guys for all of the replies, it’s given me some idea of where to look now.

Custom printed gaming suede cloth from the Chanman probably isn't ridiculous shipping to Australia...or maybe it is....
Don’t worry, I wasn’t going to scrimp on the best part. Test print below. The real thing has landed in Australia and should be in my possession within days.
