Anyone heard of Matases (roughly translated to Kill Aces)? It's a stud type game that's becoming very popular in Mexico, it's incorporated into tournaments all over casinos.

1.- Each player is dealt two cards, one of them face up. Lowest card (2) becomes the bring-in.
2.- No limit game, round of betting.
3.- Players decide to either flip both their cards face up or keep one of them face down. This applies after each round of betting.
4.- The "ayudas" (help) are dealt face up: three community cards. Each player can use up to 1 community card to complete their best 5 card hand. Use a community card or use your 5 cards.
5.- Round of betting + round of flipping cards (you'll always have either 1 card facing down or all cards face up). You can keep your original face down card covered the whole way. You can't flip a card once it's been dealt face up.
6.- Cycle repeats until players have 5 cards in their hand.
7.- Final round of betting. You can bluff your way to win the pot on any street. Otherwise, hand reaches showdown: you need to have Aces or better to win the pot. If no one beats Aces, the pot stays and another hand is dealt with the players that still have a live hand.

The way I understand it is Mexican Poker, but with a full 52 card deck and no joker. Low card bring-in. Three community cards on third street where you can use one or none. Best five card poker hand wins. Ace high qualifier.

Or five card stud, with a community board. Third, fourth, and fifth street are dealt face up, but you can choose to have it dealt face down by revealing your down card.

Maybe you wanna show "power" early on, say you have 109 suited, you hope to catch any of your suit, or any card that gives you a possible straight and you can start representing. You can keep em hidden the whole way, you can play it any way you want it.

Exactly. Maybe on fourth street you have a flush draw with all cards turned over and you wanna scare people with your fifth card in the hole. Gives you a lot of chance at bluffing. It's fun.

Pretty much, but a lot of players keep their cards face up until 5th street, it's situational.

Seems like a game that's a lot easier to get with an example deal, but I think I understand.

The way I'm reading this is like a version of roll-your-own 5 Card Stud, plus a very limited community board and an "aces or better" rule similar to the reroll mechanic in Jacks or Better draw poker. By the time you get to the end, you have four upcards and one downcard, where the downcard can be anywhere in the sequence, depending on the choices you made. If no one has a pair of aces, everyone re-antes (or not?) and a new hand starts. Presumably anyone who folded along the way does not get to rejoin.

Sounds like a fun game. I may try this one with my group, maybe with or without the community board. We already play some 5 Card Stud variants sometimes.

You can only use 1 ayuda to complete your hand. If you have a made hand like a flush, straight, etc, you don't have to use the ayudas. Enjoy the sickness hehe.
