Any thoughts on using $1 workhorse and $10 color up instead of $1 with a $20? I feel like part of the fun of limit is lots of barrels of chips, and the $20 reduces that. Anything I am not thinking through correctly?

Yeah, if $10s make you happy, use $10s. I could see that being fun, as long as I can still get a mountain of $1s to stack.

For people that are familiar with limit at a casino and not so much at a home game they wouldn't even know what a color up chip was in limit. The only chips that "should " see action in a limit game are the workhorse chips so whatever you want to use for a color up chip is fine.

The only reason a color up chip even exists is so the host doesn't have to buy so many chips. There is no logical reason that it would help the game so its not going to affect the number of chips being used. That said, I wouldn't buy $10 chips ever for any reason unless I was spreading a 30/60 or 40/80 limit game

So this is me being dumb I guess. In a 2/4 game, river bet starts 2 and gets raised twice, could you not toss in a 10?

Preflop: 2-4-6-8
Post flop: 2-4-6-8
Turn: 4-8-12-16
River: 4-8-12-16

Bets preflop and after the flop are in $2 increments… capping at three raises (or four bets)

Bets on the turn and river are in $4 increments… calling at three raises (or four bets)

A $10 chip is never directly used other thsn with a few $1 chips to make the $12 or $16 bets. However, by that time the player already has at least $8 in ones stacked in front of them from prior bets.

I don't see the $20 as reducing the barrels of chips you have in any meaningful way. Like others have said, this is just so that I can buy "only" 800 of the same denoms lol, and a rack of $25s can be more than a barrel each just to hold value and redistribute chips. Everyone still gets a rack of chips but when Tommy manages to lose a full rack, he can buy back in and I can use the value chips to represent way more.

10 is a little small for what's supposed to be a big chip, just half a barrel.

You definitely could... or you could toss in 4 more chips.

I think the point of value chips is for when you need rebuys but are out of workhorse chips. You can rebuy in value chips and then they can trade that with other players to get back workhorses. This keeps cash on the table. The alternative would involve them directly buying chips off other players which is effectively money off the table.
