Originally went with Geico for our Auto Insurance years ago because they had the best rates. But every renewal they'd bump me up ever so slightly, despite no at-fault accidents and my car being worth less each time my policy renewed.

Today I saw the auto-deduction and just decided I had enough. Called up USAA, gave me a quote that was cheaper AND provided better coverage and made the switch. Called up Geico to cancel and they didn't even try to keep my business, just processed the cancellation.

I'm right with you. Geico sucks. They kept bumping my rate up and up even though I haven't been in an accident for over 30 years and haven't had a speeding ticket in 10 years. A few years ago I put my insurance on hold for 8 months when I was traveling. When I got back they jacked my rate up even more.
When I asked why they said it was because I had a lapse in coverage. What? Did I forget how to drive. They said after a year it would go down again.
A year later they still wouldn't lower my rate. F*&k Geico. I switched to State Farm for a 35% lower rate.
Here's an idea for them. Stop running so many damn commercials and maybe they can give their current customers a better deal. Actually that goes for ALL insurance companies! /Vent

This is standard practice with all insurance companies. Because there is so much competition in the market they have great deals for new customer and screw over old customers. The only way to stay ahead is to change every year (which is a pain and they’re counting on that).

It’s not just insurance. In the last 4 years my electricity cost per kWhr has doubled when energy prices have been going down. I signed up with energyogre who charge you $10 a month but change your provider automatically every 6 to 12 months. They’re taking the pain out of switching for a fee that is a fraction of what you end up saving.

Just curious -- my ex-wife is a member too. :wtf:

They're not what they used to be. Headed down the same slippery slope that GEICO went down 40+ years ago, widening their customer base at the expense of their reputation.

Actually, after over 40 years of membership, I found that USAA sucks in Florida. When we built our house to the latest building codes in 2013, they would not insure it -- they had simply stopped writing policies in FL after the 2007 hurricane. When they started covering some homes about two years ago, but their quote was more than double our coverage with a FL company.

Then last year, I noted that my USAA auto insurance was running more than double what others were charging. No accidents, no tickets (a miracle). I went with Progressive for less than half the rate for better coverage.

All I keep with them now is a few bank accounts, and even there, their service has become less than optimal. (Don't ever try to deal with them if you're outside the US where your home cell phone doesn't work!)

I hope you looked around widely, including talking to a local broker. That can pay off in FL...
