My monthly home game tournament. It's been running 7 years now. I've affected change- better chips and cards, introduced add-ons, bounties, and even a one time rebuy which wasnt happening for the first 2 years before I joined.
but this blind schedule kills me. ( Although I don't mind the soft play and fun conversation )

1700 starting stacks.
1 rebuy before first hour.
add on only for those who didnt rebuy $5=500 chips.

they only want to play for 3.5-4 hours.

Would anyone please suggest changes to this structure for next year?

Not a fan of the selective add-on purchase policy -- the ability to get more chips for cash should be equally available to all or none, imo. Nothing wrong with giving a small free add-on (say, 100 or 200) to those that did not re-buy, as it gives the re-buy chip intrinsic value (used or not). But when the add-on costs money, everybody should be on an equal playing field.

How many players? Do you find the event often coming down to 5-6 really short stacks near the end?

I totally agree Dave but they’re pretty stubborn -dang lawyers you know.

Will have anywhere from 12 to 16 players and see usually two or three with big stacks at the end

Is this game on a weeknight? These types of games generally have a brutally fast structure, because most casual players don't want to play poker until the wee hours if they have to work the next morning.

My Tuesday night group uses the following structure, which is designed to give maximum play time to the greatest number of players and to finish in about four hours (our typical game is 12-16 players). The structure is reasonable early on, but speeds up tremendously as stacks get shallow and doesn't allow for much creative mid- to late-game play. This was a conscious decision based on the above priorities.

Starting stacks are 10K, and everybody gets a free 10K rebuy/addon. No additional rebuys are allowed, so total effective stacks are 20K per player).

Rounds are 15 minutes:
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400

400/800
500/1,000
600/1,200
800/1,600
1000/2,000
Starting here, rounds drop to 10 minutes:
1200/2400
1500/3000
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/8000
5000/10000
6000/12000
8000/16000
10000/20000
12000/24000

12 to 16 players
1700 starting stacks.
1 rebuy before first hour.

play for 3.5-4 hours.

Are you really starting with T1700 stacks? That's only 68 big blinds. How many players typically re-buy during that first hour?

Will your tourney set support larger starting stacks?

I'd give this a try next time:

T4000 starting stacks (80bb), using all 15-minute levels. Compared to the current structure, the average stack will be about 2x bigger (in BB) after the first hour, and I suspect the re-buy rate will go down a bit (likely around 3-4 total). Those extra 12bb will help make the early play feel less short-stacked, even when skipping the 25/25 level and starting the blinds at 25/50.

lvl sb bb
L1 25 50
L2 25 75
L3 50 100
L4 75 150
remove T25 chips, end re-buys
L5 100 200
L6 150 300
L7 200 400
L8 300 600
L9 400 800
L10 600 1200
L11 800 1600
remove T100 chips
L12 1000 2000
L13 1500 3000 ***
L14 2000 4000
L15 3000 6000

All blind increases alternate between 33% and 50% (averaging 41%, just a bit slower than your existing structure), and should finish no later than L13 (3:15 plus breaks for 16 players).

Here's an alternate structure, that combines longer levels with a more aggressive blinds progression -- T7500 starting stacks (75BB), with 20-minute levels starting at 50/100 and averaging 59% increases (50%-67%):

lvl sb bb
L1 50 100
L2 75 150
L3 125 250
remove T25 chips, end re-buys
L4 200 400
L5 300 600
L6 500 1000
L7 800 1600
L8 1200 2400
remove T100/T500 chips
L9 2000 4000
L10 3000 6000 ***
L11 5000 10000
L12 8000 16000

Should finish no later than L10 (3:20 plus breaks for 16 players).

Either of these will work great for your timeframe. Eliminating the antes will actually speed up play. I'd probably alternate both structures every other tournament just to keep everybody on their toes. :sneaky:

I read through the OP quickly, was looking at the blind structure and thinking to myself, I really don't see anything wrong with this. (Maybe the 50% jump at the last level from BB 2000 to BB 3000)... but then hit me when I saw the starting stack size! 1700!?! The blind structure is almost identical to a single table tourney with T10,000 stacks that will last 4-5 hours.
