I try to build sets quietly, but crazy ebay (2 Viewers)

Yeah unfortunately eBay is a brutal place right now. I've given up alot of hope over there and invested more time into trading with folks on the chipboard. Either way, shoot me a PM sometime with some pics of what you're looking for, I can see what I can find for you. If you'd like

eBay is exploding on the chip prices. I've been building Riviera and Desert Inn sets, and others, prices are going insane, I just don't get it. I usually get some good stuff from @cmrheller but prices are nuts. How can I survive ? I'm starting to lose interest :(

I've noticed the same thing, and not sure why. It's definitely frustrating to say the least.

I also had a short life on eBay. I had recently been bidding and buying. Cmrheller and chips n cats and a few other sellers

I had a short but painfully expensive run that made me feel like I'm ill equipped financially, to enjoy any further. Even what I got I know I overpaid, but I treasure in my display. It's a good thing I'm all out of space to display.

What isn’t exploding? Watches, cars, art, stocks, crypto, etc.

1/3 of all money supply (usd) was printed since COVID.

So you’re talking nominal prices have exploded but is it exploding in real terms?

I know for sure I won’t sell my chips at what I paid, except to certain people I had pleasant dealings with before which basically means I’m giving a discount in real terms. I’m looking to buy chips if people list them at the “old” prices like a year ago.

Just my worthless opinion of course.

pricing on watches? I think it depends what you want, I picked up a couple of nice pieces off eBay below market rate.

There is a season for everything. Now is a time for sellers.

The Treasury is dumping trillions of dollars into the economy, much of which is going to people with no economic losses. Not a surprise that "hobby" sorts of things are often quite expensive - but everyone has a couple of thousand extra bucks in hand or on the way, so they can afford to chase their precious.

<shrug> Its going to be tough going as a chip buyer for months and months -=- DrStrange

On top of some crazy selling prices, I also see a lot of stupid high asking prices. Those description show the sellers are chippers and not someone selling a garage sale find, or attic treasure from grandpa.

It's not just chips. Collectibles are taking off like crazy: comic books, toys, trading cards, magic the gathering cards, pokemon, etc. It's a complete seller's market for all these items as there are many buyers willing to pay record prices for them.

I’m not sure there is evidence that stimulus money is causing poker chip prices to increase. A more likely direct cause (as long as we’re speculating about causes) is that people are stuck inside.

That could lead to spending more on hobbies and other discretionary items found on sits like eBay. Money that was going to restaurant dining and vacations may be flowing into watches, jewelry, games, etc.

Hadn’t bought chips from spinettis in a few years and reached out recently as part of a new set I was building. Wanted >$10 a chip for a rack of warped and well worn chips that were filthy. Remember when you could buy chips in uncirculated condition of scale for less than $5/chip for them... like 2 years ago.

Crazy times for sure.

Yeah my mailbox has been sadly empty, lately. I don’t mind over-paying for chips on eBay; that’s what eBay is for. But lately, no. Gotta draw a line between overpaying and taking up the rear end.

A lot of people are in your boat @ovo and I don’t blame you one bit for feeling like you’ve hit a heavy road block.

I saw a period during covid when the classifieds had a good amount of activity that resulted in helping people obtain long sought after stuff but that period was short lived. Lately when browsing the classifieds 90% of it has been blue wanted tabs. Pair that together with the insane price surges we’ve witnessed and you’ve got yourself a problem in the chipping world.

Although not exactly sure what it would take but I hope this changes sooner rather than later. Perhaps an aftereffect of casino closures due to covid will result in an influx of very nice chips into the chipping world regardless of mold and helps provide it with another surge.

In the words of Andy Dufresne...I hope.

Has that actually happened? I know we all assumed it would. But I can't remember seeing news of lots of casinos closing permanently. But maybe I just haven't noticed.

Not to the extent that we expected it to, but that doesn’t mean that the flood gates aren’t going to open. I read an article the other day that circled around what’s happening to a lot of casinos during this phase of the pandemic. Many of the larger names have been able to lessen the blow by way of their cash reserves. Those usually have a better chance at surviving this mess. The others that weren’t so fortunate to have an abundance of emergency cash are starting to feel the pinch, especially in states that haven’t allowed them to open up for even a day. I may be wrong but I think we might see more closures in the very near future from those that are currently hanging on by a thread and not able to recover from the loss of business over the last year.
