Hi all - probably a more of a question for CPC directly when they’re up and running, but does anyone know how strict are the rules around only designing in the centre circle for shaped inlays?

Appreciating the design space is smaller than round inlays - Is it a design constraint so that people don’t submit designs that may look suboptimal because of cutting tolerances, or is there a physical limitation to printing? Is there another reason for this constraint?

I’m playing around with a set based off of Imperial Palace design. Looking at the old chips, it seems like they just cut a normal inlay with the shape.

I think the imperfections make the design. If I’m okay with cutting off letters is it acceptable?

(Here’s the set I’m noodling around with happy for any comments on it as well)

It’s not a physical limitation. If you have a design that needs to be printed “edge-to-edge” you actually include a “bleed” area that means your design is printed larger than the inlay and then cut within the printed area. (As opposed to an inlay that has a plain white background which doesn’t need a bleed.)

So it’s more to ensure customers get the results they want and their designs aren’t clipped by the shaped inlay.

But that happens with “real” chips as shown in your example and it’s acceptable or perhaps even desired if that’s what you want. You might need to just agree in writing so that you can’t justifiably complain that they misprinted your inlays if your artwork gets cut off

Ah cool - yah I thought as much (saving people from themselves and claiming misprints). Thanks!

Yeah, do whatever you want. CPC has tolerances and everything isn't perfectly centered, so that circle just ensures your design elements won't be clipped and is overly safe/tight. If you want the effect as on those Imperial Palace chips you're going to go outside of the circle.

Here are my shaped inlays with text pushed right up against the red line so you can see there is good white space beyond yet:

Same here with the texts nudging up against the red 'safe' zone on both round and shaped inlays. Plenty of room around if you wanted to expand the text and clip the edge of the inlays :)

Thanks so much - both those sets look amazing!

I’ve got a few designs on the go right now, I’m going to find it hard to choose what to pull the trigger on when CPC is running again.
