For Holdem 9 is generally the max amount of players that should be on a table but what about PLO? Since the game takes longer to deal, is more chaotic, and plays looser than Holdem I'm debating capping a game at 8 players rather than 9. What do you guys think?

We play 9 handed plo all the time but agree 8 is best.

And if for some reason we get 10 handed the player positioned at the button just sits out a hand.

We're 6 players max, retired poker players chilling with easy IRL cash game. Mostly: Stud for 2-3, OFC for 2-4, PLO for 4-5, NLHE for 5-6 + occasional guest. OFC and PLO are workhorse variants, we tend to play PLO tighter than NLHE.

6-7 makes for a better game but unfortunately many hosts seem to not distinguish between PLO and NLHE and just try to imitate the full ring setups they see on teevee.

Six makes me degen tingle. But any number of plo is better than NLHE.

We play dealers choice. Mostly draw, stud, and plo variants. I prefer 7 max, but will go to 8.

I love a 5 handed game! Shit can get crazy!

I usually schedule 6-8 players for a weekly game. It’s a neighborhood game so we have some backups but most guys show up each week.

We usually seat 8-9 players, but there’s always 1-2 that sit out when PLO is dealt. I prefer 6-7, personally.

5-6 is ideal for any poker game. Will play up to 8 though.

^^^ This. Too many games (of all variants) are played 9-10 handed.

Even have seen a NL host try to cram in 11, which is just terrible.

6-8 makes for more action, less passivity.

The only thing I’ve found with starting at 5-6 is that if you lose a couple players early due to some runbad, suddenly you’re down to 3-4.

I do like shorthanded play, and we usually get down to those smaller numbers late at night; but I aim to start at 8, 7 minimum, just to allow for some attrition over the course of the game.
