I make my cashless players receive payouts with cashless methods, and vice versa for cash players. What I try to avoid is dipping into my cash bank reserve when Johnny buys in for $100 with Venmo but leaves with $175 in cash.

I was trying to manage that for a while, but the money never matched up. Typically the Venmo losses far exceeded the cash wins (makes sense if you think about it) so I was frequently either having to bank up the Venmo and supply extra cash, or convince cash players to take Venmo. It wasn't worth the trouble.

Live poker to me is more fun and more “outlaw” as a cash-only affaire, but it’s becoming one of the last bastions of it.

I don't think it works to try to keep a viable bank across two media. There's no such thing as "cash" chips and "non-cash" chips once they're on the table. Better to pick one and treat transactions in the other as a favor. I let my friends rebuy in Zelle (paid immediately), but only if I have the extra cash to cover it.

I’m somewhat repeating myself… But again in a game where winners cash out for anywhere from 500-3,500, the host has to keep a ton of cash permanently on hand in case the Venmo players are the big losers of the night, and the cash players expect to get paid in cash.

And then the host winds up with depleted cash reserves but a huge Venmo balance, which has to be converted to cash before the next game… It’s just too many transactions and complications and too long a paper trail imho.

When I was trying to accept both, there were times that a winner wanting to cash out would gridgingly agree to get paid later in Venmo by whoever wound up being a loser… but even then I felt a responsibility to check in the next day to make sure things got settled up.

No one ever defaulted, but sometimes there were 8-24 hours of suspense, which I just didn’t care for.

I vastly prefer having an empty box and no obligations at the end of each session

I think I agree with the spirit of what you're trying to say, it's just that if someone's running short and offers to Zelle me, I would much rather have those chips on the table than send the player home. The cost is that, yes, every once in a while I have to top-up the bank (but not as much as you'd think, because I can subtract the amount I'd cash myself out). It happens to roughly be the rate at which I run low on small bills, which works nicely.

I get that it's a solution that doesn't scale up, but it's also self-correcting: the game is officially cash, so if you can't cover another buy-in, you say "no". The only way to guarantee to be able to play is to bring cash. Your cash bank buffer can be as large or small as you're personally comfortable with.
