We are thinking about putting a home series together, and I wanted some thoughts from people who’ve perhaps done anything similar, and thoughts before we miss something.

We are looking at 5 events that anybody can enter, and an invite only event. (6 events total) All NLHE, buy-in to be determined, but here is a rough draft just so you see the thought process.

The first 5 events will be every other week, and something like a $60 entry, with $50 going to the prize pool for that event, and the extra $10 going into a reserve. You’ll get points based on where you finish in each of those events with 100 points going to 1st, 95 for 2nd, 90 for 3rd, etc etc down to 10th.
At the end of the 5 events, the top 9 will be invited to the last event, where the entry fee will be $60. The prize pool will also include the $10 extra from every entry throughout the other 5 events.
Now, we haven’t decided on the entries, how much extra to pull for the last event, anything like that. This was just being thrown around at my gym the last few weeks, and I knew people here would be able to think of things that I don’t. I haven’t ran any big poker tournaments or anything, and only hosted cash games back in the day before my time in the casino.

The first 5 events would have a blind structure making sure it didn’t exceed the 6 hour mark, and the last event would be setup for a longer level, perhaps 8 hour game. 4 hours (breaks built in) then an hour break, and 4 more hours.

Thoughts?
Software recommendations?

I’ve seen PokerSoup, as a league tracking service. But was curious if I hadn’t seen anything else.

This is a response from Double Eagle. I accidentally posted in the Strategy forum, so I deleted it, and reposted.

"We used to do a league similar to this. However, players that came every week and paid in the the $10 extra that didn’t get to play in the the finals were not happy. So we changed to a structure where anyone who played in over 1/2 of the events could play in the finals. The top 10 in points got more chips on an increasing scale. In our case, minimum was 10,000 for everyone and the top 10 got from 1,000 to 10,000 additional chips. Problem solved. "

I need a point tracking software. I own the Tournament Director but I haven't played around enough to see if they have a points tracker.

I agree with Double Eagle. I played in a league where extra money from the buy-in went into the final tournament prize pool and the final tournament was capped at two tables for previous tournament winners and everyone else who accumulated enough points over the series. There were some players who missed out on final tournament and were not happy about it - especially with the previous winners making it in (one guy played only one tournament and won it so he got in and another guy who went to every tournament didn't get enough points and missed out). I think allowing everyone in and giving bigger stacks to the points leaders is a great idea.

If I was playing in this series, I'd also like to see the final event have an increase in the buy-in along with a longer structure - makes it seem more special as it should be.

I thought about having $60 buy-ins throughout, then also $100 for the fin.
