Hi poker chip pals. Finally decided to make an account and join the fun.

Always loved poker but just now getting some friends interested in a semi regular game. Been lurking here a bit looking at chips and tables trying to plan out my set, I've particularly got my eye on one of those Barrington folding tables.

Still debating chips between sets like Olympus, Poker Knights, Monaco Club, Showdown, or the Apache Casino Royale (can't help it, love the movie), but still very undecided. I can admit I'm obsessive with my hobbies so I'm falling down the rabbit hole a bit.

Anyways, happy to be here and excited to learn more.

Welcome! Glad to have ya here pal. If you know you are going to be into chipping big time, I suggest bypassing the sets you mentioned.

Probably best to wait till you can pick something up in the classifieds. You will probably have a few sets you like by the time your starter set arrives.

By way of explanation, the chips you mentioned are lower-end. They are slippery and won't stack well. They are satisfactory for some, but if you are obsessive about your hobbies and going down the rabbit hole a bit, you'll likely be unable to sell them, even at a loss, when you decide it's time for clay chips.

If you are going to want top-end clay chips anyway, just wait until to can afford those. You can get used Paulsons for $1-$2/chip. If you decide you want to upgrade your clay chips, you can usually sell used Paulson for nearly what you paid for them. I guess the only caveat in the clay world is custom CPCs; those don't always sell for the same price you paid, but if the design is top notch, sometimes they sell for more!

Good luck on the journey, ask questions along the way.

Thanks I kind of came to the same conclusion in my search. I'm trying to grab something in the range of $.20-$.50 per chip for now and put more money towards a nicer table for a few reasons. My group is pretty young and most have never touched a casino chip. In the past we've played with real trashy chips so these will be a big upgrade to them, they'll likely appreciate a nice visual design more than anything. The biggest factor is I still struggle to get people available to even play so it's really hard to justify at this point. In the future if I can get a regular weekly or even monthly club going I'd love to grab some Paulsons or even custom club designed ceramics etc. But that could be 5-10yrs from now.

I guess I wanted to get a cheaper set to try and start playing more regularly, but something with a cool look that I wouldn't mind keeping alongside a nicer set in the future. This is partly why I come back to the Casino Royale design for the pure novelty, I wouldn't mind keeping that around.

Curious with the options I've found so far is there any you guys recommend? I'm assuming at this price point the it really comes down to design preference.

For .50 a chip you can get Tina ceramics with semi custom or fully custom designs. Check out the Broken Arrow forum in the vendor section for more information. Welcome! There are loads of knowledgeable folks here that will be more than happy to help you along the path. Enjoy the journey.

I second this. This is the way. I started this route and it was a good way to go.

If I were in that situation, I'd be looking at stock designs from Tina/@justincarothers... @Cratty made some great designs and they function better than sluggos. You still may not get your money back, but they can be kept for the cabin or as a traveling set...

@Cratty has a lot of Tina sets for sale at super good prices. Well designed chips both tournament and cash. That’s where you can get excellent chips today in your price range.
