Cash Game Help with new home cash game (1 Viewer)

Hi guys,

New to the forum. I've been reading around for awhile but just joined.

Looking for some help on setup, chip denoms, and even some advice on a new set for a cash game. Me and 3 or 4 other guys get together once every few months to play. We've mostly just done the standard buy in (usually $10 or $20) and play to a winner. 2nd gets their buy-in back, winner takes rest. Occasionally we allow one rebuy per person until the end of a certain level. The usual tournament style game. Sometimes we just play for fun and don't even put money on the table.

I want to start moving towards a cash game since I think it will get everyone interested in playing more often. Problem is my current set is a set of 325 Dunes chips. 100s. 500s. 1000s. Now I plan on just doing a min buy-in of say $10. Max $20. 1 rebuy. 10c/20c as the game. If I used the 100 chips as 10c. 500 as 50c. 1000 as $1...would this make any sense? And how should I break it down if say 4 guys play and buy in at $10 each? Would 325 chips be enough to cover? I really don't like breaking out my yin/yang metal insert chips and I only have 125 CPS which were just a random purchase I made "just to have WSOP style chips" at the beginning of this poker chip journey I've been on. I don't like mixing sets together.

I've been trying to figure out a way for it to be simple and easy to follow but I feel like it'll get confusing along the way. Should I just look into buying a new set? I plan on adding on 175 more to top off the Dunes set to 500 total. It's the old style Dunes from Apache. Really like them. A tad lighter in weight than I had hoped but still nice chips. But the problem is I've always liked the higher denoms because we've had tournament games. I don't think I have the money at the moment to go out and buy another 300-500 chip set.

But when the time comes...what should I do? That's really my question. Go for a cash set? Try to buy as many 25c. $1 and $5 as I can? How many should I get so I can have enough of a bank if we have 5 guys playing anywhere from $10- $20 plus rebuys?

Like I said we're used to tournament style so I'm stepping in to something new by doing cash. Which I have to admit...this forum convinced me to give the cash game a try. Any and all help is appreciated!

I think trying out the cash game with your current chip setup is a great idea. If it takes off, then you can get a dedicated cash set. Your proposed 100=10c... etc conversion is exactly what I was thinking before reading what you proposed. I am assuming you have around 100x of each chip.

For a $10 buy-in, give each player:
20x 10c = $2
16x 50c =$8

For a $20 buy-in, do the same, but add on 10x $1.

Figure out how this works for you before you decide what sort of breakdown you need for your permanent set. You may find your players are quite aggressive and you don't need as many small chips (just enough for the blinds). Or... you may find that your players are really limpy... and you need more small chips and less big chips.

Remember, once you have enough small chips on the table to play, all additional rebuys can be in larger denoms. Those players making rebuys can make change with the big stack. You don't need tons and tons of small chips on the table (generally). It just slows the game down when people bet a stack of dimes instead of 2x $1.

Yes my breakdown in chips is

100s - 175
500s - 100
1000s - 25
5000s- 25

The guys I play with are very limpy. I'm the only one with any real playing experience in the casinos with cash and tournaments. Another guy has played before but is really tight and only plays "his hands." The rest are the typical home game poker players...play small until they get a hand. Bluff once every 30 minutes or so when they think they can. So I think it would be good to have the smaller denoms on the table to start.

Good thinking with the larger denoms for rebuys. I wouldn't have thought of that. We typically do rebuys in our tourneys at half the starting stack. So I wouldn't have even thought to just give five $1 chips to a guy rebuying for 5 in a cash game.

I second this.

This is what I use:
1) $10 buy-in = 20x5c + 20x25c + 4x$1 starting stacks with 5/10c blinds (100 BBs)
2) or $25 buy-in = 20x25c + 20x$1 starting stacks with 25c/25c blinds (100 BBs)

You could probably get away with 10 or 15 quarters for each person for option 1, but I like MOAR. For option 2, I recommend 20 quarters. It's worth getting a decent cash set if you really get into it. So much fun. The sickness will take hold of you soon enough.

If you know that you'll only be a max of 6 players and you stick to $25 buy-ins, thats 120x25c + 120x$1 + 15x$5 chips (to handle 3 rebuys). ~260 chips is a really affordable place to start. Take a look at the Majestics.

Do players actually rebuy for "half" the starting stack?

Weird as it may sound, yes that's usually how it works. If we play say $10 buy in we'll do $5 rebuys and I'll hand out half the starting stack for the rebuy. Sometimes guys make it work and work back up to a nice stack. There's usually only 4 or 5 of us playing.

It depends on how many of us. On occasion, depending on how many players, we'll do full stack rebuys for half the monetary buyin, but that usually requires me to dip in to my metal insert chips and I don't like doing that.

Gave it a go on the 10c/20c for the first time tonight. 5 handed. Everyone bought in for $10 or $20. Everyone had a great time.
