I've been playing micro-stakes hold-'em home games with two sets of dice chips from Target. My home games gotten up to 14 players, so the 800 chips have been useful, though not very often as 10 is normal for us. An added complication is that I tried out my first 18xx games last month (two rounds of Shikoku 1889) and really enjoyed it. I have the larger 1830 on the shelf ready to go when the three of us that enjoy the "meanness" find one or two more consistent players.

My wife asked me to make a Christmas wish list, and I went from "wanting nothing" to quickly realizing a new set of poker chips would be nice. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately), I found this community and have since started convincing myself that the set (or sets) my friends and I deserve would be too expensive for a reasonable gift. (Don't worry, I realized I aught to put socks on the wish list too.) At first, I was thinking Godel Slowplay chips, but after lurking for a bit, I decided to instead spend half the money I would have on one of those sets on various samples from Apache, The Poker Store .Com, and Slowplay. Now I'm thinking I should get some Tina samples before taking a proper plunge.

Regarding the proper plunge: I've been having trouble finding advice from people who want a set for both micro-stakes cash games and 18xx. For my 5/10c games, something like the Nash Set 500 numbered core distribution (5c x 200, 25c x 150, 100c x 100, 500c x 50) seems reasonable, while the 18xx games ask for a completely different distribution. If you're not familiar with JC's "clearclaw" profile page on BGG, a brief summary is I'm looking for 1/5/20/100/500/2000 denominations, leaning heavily on the 20s with an asymmetric bell curve out from there. So here I am, a little on the fence if I should get two sets of chips or one monolithic set. Two sets seems to make more sense, and between the two, I think the "poker" set will get more use. In the meanwhile, I'll try to sit here and be patient as samples arrive.
