have you ever cheated in a poker home game? (1 Viewer)

I wouldn't say cheated. I made mistakes because I hadn't yet figured out what was and wasn't allowed.

As far as I know nobody ever cheated at my games. I've had money go missing, but can't say for sure it wasn't my own fault.

I did reprimand a player (bit of a joker) when he had a $5 chip in his stack after we all had a break when I only had given out $0.25 and $1.00 chips to every player. That turned out to be my mistake. I'd given it when he rebought, and I forgot.

Had a player lie to me in order to obtain twice the allowed cash buyin, so essentially he started with a chip advantage no one else was allowed to have. This occurred at cash game starting up in a different room, so I didn't see that he used the chips for himself, and not for him and another buddy, as he had claimed.

I also suplied chips for a friend's tourney and had a "poker exbert" mistakingly claim he was coloring up X chips, yet only gave me about 1/3 o the chips he was announcing. I caught the mistake both times, and thought it a mistake until the last 15 minutes of the night (heads up in a tourney) when this guy struggled with calling another players 4-bet bluff (eventually folded), and begged the other player to show his cards. When the other player refused and mucked his cards, the exbert reached into the much, retrieved the cards and looked at them anyway, to reveal the bluff. Shady, and made me believe the earlier color up stakes were intentional.

Had a guy get caught looking at the deck as he shuffled and then not allowing a cut so that he would know at least one card held by a few of the players. This was on a week I was absent from the game but the previous week he had beaten another guy out of about $2k HU or three handed, obviously in retrospect running the same scam. Glad I wasn't there at the game where he was caught because they evidently kicked his ass something fierce.

not on purpose, no.

one thing that really irks me though is peoples innate ability to cover their cards when peeking at them. its literally the easiest thing in the world to do if you have use of both of your hands.

if you ever play with me and find me staring at a specific spot on a wall in front of me, its because the person to my left or right is checking their cards, and im doing my best to not use my peripheral vision and accidentally see their cards.

If you cheat, at some point you will pay a significant price. Why play the game if you need to cheat to win.

I have not and nobody at any of my games, or games I have gone to has not had a situation where someone is attempting to cheat.

This has been my experience, NO ONE has been caught or even seems to be slightly shady (good group of players).
I am the same way as manamongkids, I look at the player in front of me or the wall or to the person(s) at the opposite end of the table and even strike up a conversation....

Even if the opportunity is there don't take it, as EZMONEYRMJ said:

Never cheated unless you count not telling a guy next to me (after telling him twice before) that he is showing his hole cards.

I have played in a few games that were so bad that it was kind of like cheating.

I found a $5 chip under the table once at a casino and added it to my stack w/o saying anything.
Does that count?

Not really cheating but like fish72s, I was privy to my neighbors cards because they refused to protect them. I warned them once and then made an effort to not intentionally look. But it happens and well I used the information accordingly..

In my experience even telling the person next to you (in a casino or card room, not s friendly home game) that you can see their cards can lead to unpleasant results. I don't warn anymore. If I see your cards, that's on you.

I should edit this to say that when I never actually played out a hand with that guy when I knew what he had. He folded the few hands I saw and left soon after. I'm not sure what I would have done if he'd had KK and I had AA. I probably would have re-raised and showed my hand.
If he'd had AA and I had KK, and if I'm being honest, I think I would have just folded w/o saying anything.

Never had, never will. Did have a new player to a game think that something was amiss when his AA (and QQ next to him) was taken down by my JJ. That said given that the flop contained two jacks and I called every bet to the river before going all in (as did QQ), I figure I had everything short of a neon sign on my forehead saying "DANGER: AT THE VERY LEAST TRIPS HERE".

I go out of my way to keep things legit, it being a friendly game.

In that it's a friendly game I'll always warn a player once about flashing cards, but after that it's on them. In a casino setting I might warn a rank newbie, but otherwise I figure folks know what they're doing and if they want to suck down Jack and cokes and wave their hole cards around, well who am I to stop 'em?

This.

If you're waiving your hole cards around like a fool that's on you.

But actually cheat?

Never. That's a brand you don't want.

No. It defeats the purpose of the game. While earning is nice, the thrill of poker for me is about playing the player to win and learning something if I lose.

I always feel bad for others at the table and not the moron fish beside me who can't protect his cards. It's unfair to all the others at the table if I'm the only one who can see them. I usually just tell them after the second time but i do it very casually. Good thing it doesn't happen often

Thankfully you'll tell the blind monkey sitting next to you at the BBotBs.

that's a fair concern, but i learned after about a dozen times trying years ago that you're much more likely to get suspicious looks from other players when you announce that you can see someone's hand and you'll almost always get the snide (and sometimes passive-aggressively serious) comment that you shouldn't be looking. at this point my desire to avoid this type of nonsense (and the effect that it sometimes has on the table of making things seem "serious") outweighs everyone else's right to my protection against someone else's imbecility.

i would go out on a limb and say that someone who donates time, money, and the significant wear and tear on his home to host a meetup is deserving of being told. once ;)

We have caught 2 cheaters in our home game. The evidence was not conclusive while they were on the premesis, so they both left with some of their money in their pocket, but it was enough evidence to ban them.

In one case we caught the cheating on video, but didn't see it until after the game was over.

The people that brought them into the game (from the EPT, local bar league) were also banned. I was selective before in who we allowed to play, now I'm doubly so.

nope, but I did ban a player for not trying to fix a problem with the pot. He technically did nothing wrong, but he also didn't do anything to help with it (mike32 want to sound off with the specifics). It didn't feel right. My gut said he knew that he shouldn't have gotten the extra 25, but since he didn't do anything to help resolve it, I never invited him back.

Id be interested in hearing this story...also interested in the taping methods. Was I taped at BBotB5 and I didnt know it?

And for the most part, the people who play those EPT events are the worst. Just my 2c

It's semi-late (about 10pm) and everyone has been drinking so the action and table banter is lively. I decided that it would be cool to film a hand for PCF (or Chiptalk - forget which was in vogue at the time) and I announce to the table "I'm gonna film this one hand, don't say anything you wouldn't want your wives to hear" and setup my iPhone in front of my stack in plain view. I make a big show out of showing my 6 cards in the next SOHE hand to the camera and making stupid comments about them ("Oooooh, lookie that, I love that card...)

It just so happened that I had the iPhone pointed at the guy who ended up switching cards between his SOHE sides post-flop. We played the hand out (I potted turn and folded when there was a 3 way all in chopped 2-ways). We didn't know he was moving cards around at the time - he was suspected of doing it later in the night. I didn't see the cheating in the video until I previewed it for language/comments before posting it the next day. He has not been invited back and never will be (and neither will the individual he came with, who I actually knew reasonably well).

You weren't taped at BBOTB5 unless you saw someone walking around with an iPhone or Android announcing "I'm recording this". No cameras in the ceiling or anything like that. You often see people taking pictures for posting on PCF/Chiptalk but that's been happening for at least the 6 years I've been playing the MA/NH home circuit.

In both cases we've made process changes to prevent this from happening forward - and I would be shocked off my rocker if any of the remaining players in our player pool even briefly contemplated the possibility of thinking about the feasibility of maybe cheating - but the process changes ensure that new players feel good about the game (basically, we cap our SOHE hands pre-action and leave them on opposite sides of our stack, and there is always a cut offered when someone deals). Also, I'll never invite an EPT player to play with us ever again.

well that makes sense.

1. I stink at SOHE so I fold almost every hand in that rotation (lol)
2. I dont touch my cards after first seeing them

Was he a regular? Maybe he didnt know the SOHE rules about switching hands? Is that a possibility or was this a blatant angle?

I've never cheated a game and it's hard to understand the motivations of those who do.

Had to ban a player from my game who palmed chips from the pot. It was only $10, and he was a winning player in the game and a reg, hard to understand why he would do it. I confronted him next day on the word of a pro dealer in the game who I trust and also several other incidents (shady color up twice leaving the bank short $100, efforts to help others cash out, etc) that led up to this. He never protested his innocence as you would expect if not guilty and basically admitted it to me in text message. I still see him at casino poker, and his public story is he did nothing wrong but decided to quit playing my game. Went out of his way to tell his side to players in my game who had no idea anything had happened. Awkward. Good riddance.

Never cheated in any card game for money. I will confess to having cheated at Asshole, but I think that is not only expected, but encouraged.

I've run into situations where people are not being very protective of their cards, so far as to just pick them up with one hand and hold them above their chips looking at them. I'll mention that they may want to protect their hand because people can see the cards just to absolve myself of any guilt, but if they continue to do it then I don't feel any shame in accidentally seeing their cards. At that point they're simply showing me their cards for some reason.
I won't stare at their hand waiting for them to reveal it, but I'm not going to feel uncomfortable trying to avert my eyes from their stupidity. I've never had anyone get snooty and say "why are you looking at my cards" or anything, but I wouldn't feel like the fool if he did. If he has that attitude then the the idiot might as well play with his hands face up and trust that no one will look.

No he was not a regular. He knew the rules. He was switching hands late into the streets. He constantly rotated the holdem em side with his left hand and rotated the plo cards with his right hand and when he felt the moment was right he do a little 3-card-monte trick of switching the cards. It was obvious on video he knew what he as doing. Anyone doing it by mistake would openly look at a card, switch, be content, move on with action, etc. This guy was left-right eyeball watching while doing his circular pattern of both hands before the switch. Can't describe it any more but the guy was cheating.

I've never played EPT but clearly there are some dudes in that league who are SHADY. Stick to chip nerds. Much safer.
