When I got into this hobby, fracs were the critical chips to acquire. It was the base for every set for most of us playing .25/.50 at $100 buy ins.

I don’t know if it’s just the folks I play with, but latley it seems that the fracs are irrelevant in our game. We haven’t exactly raised stakes, but the number of buy ins has grown and it’s common for stacks to grow to the point where fracs just don’t matter. I recently bought a plastic set without fracs although I haven’t felted them yet. If I did a new custom set I might get fracs but wouldn’t design around them.

It feels that some of this is just inflation affecting things, but I don’t know.

What do you all think?

As your group gets older they are probably making more money than they were years ago. $100 doesn’t mean as much as it did before. My game did the same thing several years ago. My first custom set was based on 25/50c $100 or $200 buy-in. My last custom set doesn’t have a frac and is designed for a $2/5 sized game.

Long live fracs!!

Sorry… haven’t used that pic in a while! lol

I feel like they’re just not that common of a chip, or at least 50¢ chips aren’t. They cost more to make than the chip is worth in the casino. Plus, with blackjack minimums going up, casinos use $2.50 chips more often, and that denomination doesn’t work well in poker.
