So browsing fb marketplace I stumbled across a sales ad for cheap alibaba acrylic plaques.

But something strange stood out.

I'm all for some good old Aussie Ingenuity, but being a chipper this just felt bizarre. Over labelling a plaque? :wtf:

So its begs the question. Has anyone every tried to modify a plaque? Is it even possible?

If anyone has some ideas or wants to give it a go Id be up for donating some proverbial sacrificial lambs for the slaughter in the name of chipping science!

I think printing on clear vinyl sticker rather than a solid background like the above might have some promise if applied tastefully. Lol
Not just tastefully - PERFECTLY.

The problem with clear vinyl stickers is you can see the glue. The surface has to be perfectly smooth, and the application done perfectly.
(think smartphone touchscreen protector level perfect)

All those clear decals on cars and windows don't have glue...they are "clings" using water to vacuum the plastic to the smooth.
(you can get google to tell you how that works)

Clings won't work in this application, the slightest bit of catch or friction at the edge and it comes up because there is no adhesive.

We don't have cling media because it isn't useful on chips.
We don't have clear media because it looks horrible applied to anything chip related.
We haven't made over labels for plaques, and likely never will intentionally.

Just have the plaques you want made from scratch. Stickers on plaques would look so strange.
Im hoping someone is wanting to get more adventurous. Some how remove the top layer of printing and either laser etch something or some sort of foil print. I dont have the technical know how so I'm throwing it out to the collective brains trust

I am happy to give it a try. I have both a laser and a CNC.

Unfortunately my laser is a diode laser, which means it cannot cut anything clear, but still willing to experiment. I ordered some "gold" powder coat paint to see if I can melt it with the laser.

This guy got pretty good results by masking and painting the back of clear acrylic he cut with a laser. Could be a way to make a small run of custom plaques or to make an "inset" into an existing plaque, possibly.
