Has anyone ever rented out/loaned a set of their chips? (1 Viewer)

Loaned a set once. Was three chips short and two damaged when I got it back. Friend shrugged his shoulders like “oh well”. Be prepared for this is what I’m saying.

I think there’s a lot of apples and oranges here.
I wouldn't loan any sets to anyone who I thought wouldn’t appreciate and take care of them. So mostly no to any non PCF people.
PCF people know and appreciate what they have. I like to think that No reputable PCF person would return a set damaged without going through hell and high water to remedy it, including doing something like buying a 1000 piece set just to get the two missing chips.

I agree. I thought this guy was trustworthy because I worked very closely with him. Just as much my fault as his I guess. Live and learn.

I have a set on loan to @detroitdad right now. He had to put down a purchase-size deposit, but I still consider it a loaner, because it's coming home to mama one of these decades. :)

fyp :)

As to the OP. I've never "rented" out a set. If you were someone that I trusted I would probably let you borrow it for free, or with a market value purchase that I would refund upon getting the set back.

I consider most of my chipset purchases to be rentals fwiw.

I'd love to borrow some of the amazing sets I see on here, and would even pay for the privilege. And I'd love to loan out mine, not that anyone would be interested. But then I think about how I'd feel if anything happened, whether I inadvertently lost or damaged someone else's chips, or someone did the same to mine. And I recoil in horror at either possibility. Not because of the potential costs involved, but because of the sheer difficulty (or impossibility) of replacing these things and the fond emotional connection we have to the objects in our collections.

Probably in most cases the sentimental risk is going to outweigh the practical benefits.

... more's the pity.

Oh, the horror! I can just imagine a chip or two getting lost and the drama that would ensue.

a friend asked to use my ceramic set once and I said sure. He returns them with 2 chips missing. He apologizes but says he’ll just pay me for them and it’s “only two chips”. I tell them they are <$1/chip but I wouldn’t be able to find them. He said he let his nephews play with them and they lost them.

that was 3 years ago. He messaged me last week saying he was going to start his game up again and is looking for a set. He asks me to help him find a really nice set. I try to be nice and show him my sets and tell him what they cost me. I tell him I acquired them rack by rack matching colors and molds and I got labels made. He says “make a set for me”

I say there’s lots on eBay just look there.

I lent to my friend a few times before and the set was return without any missing chip or any major issue, it really depend on the person who you lent the chip too

I will not consider renting any chip however only lent ing

If it was me I will probably buy him a Dice set and told him they are best suitable for him since he most likely will lost a lot of chips here and there and want to solve the thing easy with money

Did you find replacements?

I have 2 relatively expensive sets out on loan right now, at no cost to the borrowers. One is a 500 chipset leaded THC mixed set, and the other is a complete Vineyards cash set. My only stipulation on the loan has been the number of times the chips can be used in games.

Safe to assume the borrowers are chippers or PCF members? Or are they non-chippers that you trust to appreciate what it is they are borrowing?

Ah but how much would you pay for the privilege and how long (how many games) would you expect to keep them for?
Would the pricing be different between a custom CPC set, obsolete Paulson, TRK, or BCC, or NAGB set? Would fee be affected by chip popularity?

Seems like if someone would be willing to pay rental deposit fee equal to current market value etc, that could be a way to harvest a set; provided the renter didn't care about their reputation.

I've loaned a set or two out to some close friends when they were needed for a game I couldn't go to. They know how much the sets mean to me and understand the cost of the sets. That doesn't mean I didn't feel a bit nervous while they were gone, but the loaning was just for a game and they were promptly returned in proper order. These are guys I know would hold themselves accountable if the set were missing/damaged/incomplete.

this is important. I wouldn’t mind lending my chips to other chippers since you know they have some foundational understanding of value and sentiment. I lent to a nonchipper just assuming they would take care of property that isn’t theirs.

I loaned a cash set out for a buddy's casino night for his 40th birthday. I was invited and would have attended myself, but was out of town that weekend and loaned him the set for the event.

I won't lie... I was a little nervous since I didn't know most of the people attending and knew it was going to be a lot of inebriated gents. And since the set was spreading a few different games (poker, BJ, and craps) he wasn't going to be able to keep an eye on all the chips all the time.

But he knew how valuable they were, and every last chip made it home.

I have loaned out my Nexgen Lucky Bee's a few times over the years. Otherwise I and left my chips (pharaoh's) behind at a game that was being hosted in an apt of mine back in the day. I had to go in to work the horses in the morning back when I had Thoroughbreds at Woodbine. I did have a girl dealing in the morning and phoning/texting (the first time I learned to text) when any chips were added. That was a wild summer that year lol....

I'd love to go back to those days again. I certainly have the chips for it now.
