My wife and I purchased the DNA kits from My Heritage, and finally received our results.

For those people that know me, you can usually take 1 look at me and assume my family's background. My mother's family is Italian, 1st and 2nd generation. Her father came from Italy to the US in the 1920's. Her Mother's parents also came over from Italy, although I don't have the details. My mother's maiden name is Iacobacci, and it doesn't get much more Italian than that. I really took the test to see what my Father's side of the family was, as we have never really had a firm grasp on that. My last name, originally spelled "Krafft", is of German origin, but that is all we knew.

SO, when I got the results, I was shocked. I will be taking another test to see what it says. Has anyone else had any experiences like this?

Nice to see another fellow Englishman on the boards. First @BonScot now you  :ROFLMAO:

I’m kind of interested to try it myself now, except I expect a really boring result.

I find these things hilarious. If the authorities say “we’re taking a sample of your DNA to keep on file in case you ever do anything naughty” we would go bananas, say our human rights have been breached and organise a protest. But someone says “give me your DNA and I’ll tell you if your great granny was Irish or Latvian” we all say “yeah ok how much do you want?”

I did 23 and me. Pretty cool overall - and actually helped my confirm which countries to use for my chipset.

My dad's side was pretty much straight scandanavian as expected, but my mom's side that we expected to come back half (so for me, 25%) italian/mediterranian actually came back with much more british/irish/anglo influence than thought on that side.

That said, some of these also do the testing for medical "markers". I did that, and was nervous (and luckily dodged all the "bullets") but I wouldn't say it's all in good fun to find out that you have the markers for early onset alzheimers or some other serious condition.

Don’t think I would do that. I can just imagine the results.

DNA people - “It’s bad news. You’re likely to die of cancer, heart attack, stroke, head falling off.”

Me - “wow I’m so glad that you found that early. What can you do to help me?”

DNA people - “absolutely nothing but thanks for your money.”

Me - “Great. I’ll go home and dwell on that until my head falls off.”

Dont worry. If you have the early onset alzheimers one you'll forget all this soon, anyway.

I got the 23 and Me for my fiance a year ago and her results didn't jive with what she believed. Her last name is Odin and she always thought she was basically of Nordic descent. Well the results put her at only a few percentage Nordic.

I have not done one myself, yet, but I assume a similar, somewhat shocking result for me. With parent last names of Beck and DeVitis, I've always thought I was mostly German and Italian. But I'm sure I'm more a genetic mutt. But until I do the test, I'll be happy with my ignorance.

And I wanted to try a test to see how accurate those tests are. The untrusting part of me thinks they just randomize the results and generate you a report. Now my sons are identical twins. If I did it for both of them, it should come back with the exact same report for each of them, right? Will be interesting to see.

Do it. Experiment on the twins!!

I avoided these because I don't want the government to have my DNA. But then my sisters did it so I'm effed anyways. Might try it now.

So if you were a criminal mastermind you could take one of these but use someone else’s spit. Then “They” would have the wrong dna on “file”.

So one thing with the Scandanavian backgrounds (and my uncle had paid a geneologist to trace the family back as far as they could, ended up going back many hundreds of years in some cases and it confirmed this argument for my family personally to some degree) is that the vikings raided the northern European coasts and British isles and...let's say...regularly introduced new genes into the gene pool. So a lot of Scandanavian heritage won't look pure because it's a mix of all the northern European countries.

Personally I don't get it. What's the point? I know where I was born. That's my heritage and as far back as I need to go.

Welcome Krafty ! We forgive your transgressions against the Crown. A royal pardon is heading your way now.

I do half agree with Moose. It really doesn't matter. But history is interesting and human migration is VERY interesting. to me anyway.

I'm not giving my DNA to the Mormons and paying to do so.

I do have a friend that is an embalmer who probably could be convinced to provide me with a random sample, however.

For me, although some said they don’t like it, it was the genetic predisposition to bad stuff that got me doing it. I want to know if there’s things I should do to be healthier and if im just fucked then that’s good to know to cause there’s some risky shit I might do, like participate in a heist.

I like your thinking. You should change your avatar to a white cat...
