Hello everyone! I'm back with a more polished draft of my first custom chip set and would love some sage council from the learned crowd.

For the set, I want to go with more of a western inspired feel with neutral colours than the Vegas casino look. The river our club is named for was the guiding force for putting together the chips, and each chip is meant to evoke an element in nature.

I have an inlay now! My wonderful sister drew the cow and I threw the rest of it together in Inkscape. I can already tell that the detail on the face is too fine so she's working on a version where that's simplified, but hopefully the rest of it is at least a good start. I tried to cook up a suitable tannish off-white for the background but I feel that that can probably be improved upon.

I'm fairly happy with the spot progression and colour palette. I'm planning on having these printed on Tina 39mm web molds, but I'm sticking to the Paulson colours to limit my starting palette to something manageable. I know the colours won't print 1-1 on Tinas and I'll have samples made and tweak from there, but if there's any obvious clashes from people who have more experience with these colours I'd be grateful to hear.

I'm also still trying to decide between the $20 and $25.

I would swap the colors on the .05 and the .25, you say you don't want a Vegas look but kept every chips base color the same as Vegas.

You have too much green on that yellow 20. If you have a .05 in play you should go with the 20.

I would move to something like this:

I like the idea of a $20 over a $25 for your stakes. One of my favorite combos for the yellow $20 is green and purple (or lavender, plum, rose). You also have different edge spot configurations on each denom, so why use 2 quarter pies in the lineup? Maybe find another spot pattern for one of those?

Hmm, I see what you’re saying. I think that by not looking for a Vegas feel I was less concerned with chip base colours as I was looking for a more sombre, neutral design than some of the high colour contrast chips and flashy inlay designs that casinos sometimes gravitate towards. I think they look great, but they’re not quite what I want for this set.

The current lineup is meant to represent things from nature. In order, I envisioned them as stone, the cow, a river, the sun or sunrise/set, and grass/wheat/hay for the $20/$25. I’m pretty happy with the spread of base colours.

As for the 2 1/4 pies for the .05 and .25, I’m planning on doing a 1/2 for the .05, the PCF design tool just doesn’t have that option.

The purple/yellow $20 definitely falls into the camp of “designs I love but don’t quite feel are at home in this set”. The complimentary colours really pop, but I think it’s a little too bold to mesh with the rest of the lineup. Maybe something like this could work to cut down on the green while still keeping the wheaty character?

no more green on your $1
more punchy spot colors for your $5
same spot and color for the $20, juste reverse main/spot color

Hmmm. I like the development of the 5. I think a green 20 would wig me out a little too much. I've updated my original lineup a bit to reflect the direction of the 5 and try and make it pop a little more while still meshing with the rest of the set.

A lot of the feedback seems to be leading in the direction of a bolder, more colourful and contrasted set than I had originally planned for. I'm trying to keep an open mind, and did an alternate version with the blue and purple 1, a bolder 5, and the yellow and purple 20.

It's hard for me to say which direction I prefer--I definitely imagined something closer to the first version, but I'm trying to give v2 a fair trial. I think the blue/purple 1 is very snazzy, the yellow and purple on the 20 really pops here, and I think a solid .05 is more at home in this set and is another cool option.

I get it now, it's a "nature" kind of theme. Your yellow with moss green and bronze looks great! It's your brainchild so don't change it due to other opinions. I think you should stay on track. I also like your idea of a 1/2 pie on the nickel.

Ok! Thank you for the encouragement. I do like the second kind of direction, but I think it'll have to be a future project (so much for "one and done."...). I'm going to stick to something closer to what I originally imagined.

So here's an updated version with the less green 20, poppier 5, and an added 100 (another cow chip) that I don't imagine we will need anytime soon but the over-preparer in me insists must be included.

I've also worked with my sister to revise the inlay graphic a little bit. Some of the finer details have been enlarged/boldened for improved readability. We've given it the old print-at-scale-and-hold-at-arms-length and I'm happy with where we're at. I think I might go ahead and see if I can get some samples printed?

Honestly it looks like all your adjustments came out great and the $100 chip is a showstopper addition!

Complete side note, but I don’t know if you have JP Licks where you live but it’s an east coast ice cream shop and that $100 chip completely reminds me of their vibe. I hope that comes off like compliment that it is intended to be.
