Friends hosting with dice chips (1 Viewer)

What do you do when you have friends who want to host poker games, but they only have dice chips?

  • Don't say anything, and just take their money

  • Work on them to get "better" chips

  • Bring a travel set of mint chips

  • Bring a travel set of more worn chips

  • Donate chip sets

  • Added: Bring a travel set of ceramics

If you're a friend of a friend, just STFU and be a good guest. If he's your best friend from college, tell him his chips suck and you're bringing better ones from now on.
Exactly what I meant. Read the situation.
Its just not a focus point for anyone I play with. Both good friends and casual acquaintances alike.

I think its pretentious to impose my "good" chips on another persons game.

If someone else is hosting then let them host their way. Its really more about friends and drinks and having a good time.

I feel like most are now talking about understanding etiquette, where boundaries are, and generally not being a dick. :x:bag:(y)

^^^^I definitely agree with this and what others have posted.

I voted to stay quiet. I play in a friendly game in my neighborhood with some older guys that use dice chips and paper cards. Frankly the chips don’t bother me but the bizzare denominations assigned to them is hard to adjust to.

However paper card are really really bad. Way worse than using dice chips. I had a set of poker sized Copags (I use bridge sized) that were sent to me when I ordered a base for my table. I offered them up to him by saying I just didn’t like the size. They busted them out the next game when I wasn’t there and he said they didn’t like them. One guy in the group referred to them as those “crazy slippery cards”. He went back to paper with bent corners.(n)

Now I don’t say shit. Instead I try to invite him to my game so he can see nicer chips and cards. He has never accepted my invitation.

They are crazy slippery and it tilts me off the face of the earth when I set a deck down and 3 cards slide off, but after playing with desjgns I'll never go back to paper. In a 7 hour session we destroy a paper deck, 100 percent unusable. Plastics are at 20 hours, we're open when I got them (not sure how used) and are still like new.

When I was 18, I had a car. Not a particularly nice one, but it got me from point A to point B... most of the time.

When prom came around, the brother of a friend offered to loan me his turquoise 1957 Cadillac.

As far as I was concerned, my car was "good enough" My 72 Chevy didn't bother me. After reading all the posts that read "STFU", or "you are insulting the host", I realize now that he must have been insulting me. What a dunce I was.

The other group I play in uses the spinettis equivalent of dice chips, some generic cic chips. Much much better than dice chips, but still not good enough for me  :ROFLMAO:

Anyway, after about 6 months of playing with them, getting to know the hosts, I brought a chipset with me to the pre tourney cash game with the thought that if a second table opened up I would offer to deal and play with my chips. Everyone was cool with it, people liked the chips (43mm hybrids) although I had some comments about the odd (Cali) colors. Last month I arrived plenty early and asked if we could play with my new mixed rhc set, received lots of positive comments. From now on my plan is to arrive early enough to get my sets into play.

It probably depends on the disposition of the host, but the guy that runs this game loves poker and is all about anything that can better the experience. So I read the situation and just brought mine and asked if we could get them into play.

That's a tough situation, it's sad that your quality gear isn't getting used in that game. The first time I brought Copags, it was to a friend's who has a hard plastic (costco) table, people at first were convinced that the cards were a problem, because they kept sliding really fast and off the table. o_O:eek::mad:

Everyone has since decided that it merely forces people to pay attention and catch the cards, which ends up speeding up our game. :D Step in the right direction!

Looking holistically at the scenario, I think a lot has to do with intent and pride. Personally, I wouldn't feel insulted if someone brought a nicer set of chips to my game. I would probably be pretty excited to try out new chips/molds/plaques/etc.

Although, I would feel insulted if someone brought Dice Chips to my game and then wanted to put them in play.

I asked the host privately if they'd like some chip coaching... They got pretty offended and said they were happy with their dice. Never brought it up again

I wouldn't be insulted... I would first think I was being "punked". Then, I would use i as a learning opportunity. Security usually boggles their mind, but an "accidental" barrel explosion is a pretty handy learning tool.

I voted to keep my mouth shut, but after thinking about it, my answer has changed to the right answer for most poker strategy questions...."it depends".

If it's just a casual, fun game among a few good friends for low dollars, keep your mouth shut and enjoy. If it's a real good friend, maybe ask if he/she has ever thought about getting different chips (different, not better....even though we know they will be better). However, and please forgive me for not going back and looking who said this (probably more than one person), if it's anything more than that, you may want to mention that the chips are too generic for games in which there is more than pocket change involved, and it is too easy to introduce foreign chips into the game.

Unlike most people on this forum, I don't have many sets of chips and the ones I do have are, to be kind to myself, less expensive than most. (I live vicariously through others and fondle their chips. ;):p:eek:) However, even I invested in a cheap set of Nexgens and customized them for tournaments so that they could not be easily duplicated. Once I thought about that, I believe I answered the poll incorrectly.

Even though there are a lot of us here, I would still believe we're the vocal minority when it comes to the chips at a poker game. I recently played at in a casino tournament and the chips were hot stamped BCC with a Paulson Starburst used for a rebuy. I would be willing to bet the I was the only person out of ~50 people that knew that.

I have a couple friends that ask about my Horseshoe Cleveland WSOP chips because they grew up in the area or Ohio in general and I think they appreciate the nice table and equipment. But when they ask why I spent so much on building the table or chips I try to relate it to one of their hobbies.

You could play football in some random grassy field with divots everywhere and cones used as the end zone but wouldn't you rather play on a nice dedicated field made of turf with all the lines painted.

I can see benefit in offering to bring chips with the correct denoms on them. Then I don't think it is snooty to offer to bring chips for that reason. Having correct denoms written on each chip actually improves the game flow and isn't just paulson elitism :)

That's what kills me the most about dice or even non denoms is the "what is the green chip worth?" questions from casuals.

What do you do when you have friends who want to host poker games, but they only have dice chips?

I have been thinking about it and my friends appreciate my chipping hobby and enjoy playing with my authentic casino chips. ...But so far no one seems to want to spend money to upgrade from their dice chip sets.

I know this is a situation as old as time, and I am wondering what the community tends to do?

Thanks!
im currently using dice chips waiting to find my 1st real set i play a lot in casinos
my thoughts are i want real deal chips but most of the players dont really care so id be buying a nice set for my personal satisfaction although once my game gets running i dont want anyone bringing extra chips to the table
ive seen this happen to other games and its a nightmare

Yep that is a valid point to bring up. What was rubbing me the wrong way was the attitude of "hey can I bring my own chips cuz they are better than yours..."

If someone bought chips and makes the effort to host no need to burst their parade bubble in the rain.

You've seen players smuggle outside chips into other games? This is one of those things that's always been a sort of phantom threat to me. I know it's possible, and I'm sure it has happened numerous times, but I've never personally witnessed it. The times you've seen it happen, how did the host know someone smuggled chips? How did it go over? I feel like these could be interesting stories.

As to my vote in the poll, I once donated a set of these to a friend who hosted only occasionally with dice chips: https://www.amazon.com/Trademark-Casino-Poker-Acrylic-Carrier/dp/B000J2CWAK. (Aluminum case, not birdcage. I had 850 total chips, IIRC.) I had been trying to sell them, but I decided it would be better to give them to someone who could use a modest upgrade, rather than selling them to a stranger for a pittance.

In general, though, I wouldn't say or do anything—just appreciate the person's hospitality and shrug off the fact that I'm playing with dice chips.

Yep only the hardcore fans will care about the chips as long as they are not the plastic bike chips people don’t care imo

Oh, so that incident was at a raked house game (as opposed to a free-to-play home game)? I have a bit less sympathy for a raked house game operator who tries to get away with dice chips than an ordinary home-game host who does the same.

With a home game, it's more forgivable because the players are all ostensibly friends or whatever. Take away that element, and you're asking for trouble hosting with such an insecure chip.

if it’s a close friend, i’ll offer to bring chips. if it’s an acquaintance, i’m keeping my mouth shut... but if it’s brought up, i’m all over it lol. if i do bring chips, it’s usually just my china clays. we used my pharoahs tourney chips at a pre wedding cash game last month and after the initial confusion of “why is 100 a dollar” “500 is 5 bucks right?” people were loving the feel, edgespots, and actually having a denom (even tho divide by hundred in effect). now, these are guys that use like 3000 multicoloured mixed dice, super diamond, wheat sluggos and a chips a chip (.25 no matter the color) except blacks, which are a dollar  :whistling:, and in the end, most appreciated the difference. i had several players asking where you get clay chips, and a few might have joined the forum. i doubt they will ever get over the fact that my quarters at home cost 3.50CAD a piece..minds were blown lol

Honestly, unless it is a really good friend, I don't really want to bring my chips, I don't have a back up set yet and the thought of getting knocked out early and having to stick around or leave my chips there does not sound fun to me. I also host most of the time now, so when I play at someone else's house I don't want to stress about the table or chips, I just want to play. If someone ever asked me to I would help out, but I wont force it on them or even really suggest, especially if I do not know them well, unless I have a cheaper secondary set to bring. Ah, just another reason to buy chips! Maybe I will get a travel/loaner set from the black Friday sale!

I say nothing. To me, it’s bad form. It’d be like if we’re going to lunch in your car, and I say “hey, my car is nicer, would you rather I drive?”

I've done that. I drove a Cadillac, my Captain drives a Jeep. We were being sent for our annual physical in early (and bitter cold) February. Its about a 20 minute drive, and we have to wear shorts.

Usually the Captain drives, but I offered to drive instead. The Caddi had heated seats, and a remote start, the Jeep was a soft-top. He refused and we went and froze. We were fine, but the Caddi would have been more comfortable.

I don't think he saw my request as "bad form". It's a polite, and genuine offer to use something better. Sure, you can phrase it is a way that is bad form or insulting, but the same offer can be made with a sincere form of benevolence. If you can't tell the difference then it is probably best to not offer - and to be safe, keep your mouth shut as often as possible.

When you say "froze" and then "fine". :ROFLMAO:

I offered to bring chips on a couple of occasions and was just told that "we have plenty." I eventually started my group on the same night and don't attend that game anymore. =/
