Hello! I am Biznasty/Cameron. I have always loved poker; only this past year have I been taking my game serious in studying and practicing for Live tournaments and online MTT. More recently I have come to love poker history: the game, the players, the cards and now the chips. Needless to say I am very happy to have stumbled into PCF. Very happy to have found such a cool community along with this new hobby.
Looking into buying a good first 500pc Poker Set for $1/$2 home games. was considering buying a more budget friendly set (~$.20/chip). Though after doing lots of research into poker chips, I am enamored with my options and left wondering if I'd be better off investing into a higher quality set. I also enjoy the look of the affordable Milano chips (~$.40/chip). However I truly love higher end sets such as the Rounders Scrolls ($2.25/chip). I also wouldn't be apposed to piecing together a set of H&C, IHC, RHC or THC molded chips as I keep finding myself obsessed with old beautiful chips such as the San Bruno, Casino Royale Blurples (~$5/chip). With all of that said, I understand I'm never going to stop after getting just the one poker set so it leaves me with the question of should I just begin with getting the higher grade chips (likely the Rounders set or piecing together something like a San Bruno set) or settle with a cheap one and upgrade sets as I go. I am also heavily interested in what some of your favorite poker sets out there are and what your favorite poker chip mold is. Thanks!

Welcome!

What study tools have you been using in your MTT studies? You will find PCF way more useful for chips vs poker strategy, but we do have a strategy forum that features some interesting hand histories from time to time.

I love watching poker tournament livestreams old and new, studying the players, their tendencies, ranges, tells, etc. Jonathon Little also puts out a lot of great free poker coaching content, along with his preflop charts based on GTO strategy. The Preflop+ app is also a tool I often find myself using providing training exercises on equity, pot odds, card combinations and ranges.

Don’t buy cheap chips thinking you can sell them later and ladder up. There are plenty of cheap chips on the retail market. If you buy one of these sets plan on keeping it or gifting it.
Higher end sets have a better chance of resale and the increased ability to move up or around in the chip trading/selling world. They are better to play with too.

Do people really buy plastics expecting to turn a profit later? I bought my Apache and Justin set knowing that if I ever sold them they’d be at a markdown from original cost.

I just don’t want a new guy to see the talk about selling chips, appreciation, etc… and think that’s how it works for all chips, and especially given his stated budget (that we know he’ll go over, lol)

Hello and welcome!

If you're getting into higher end chips, keep in mind while price researching: prices are lower this year than last.

Looking forward to seeing what your first chip set will be.
