Excuse-O-Meter. Share Your Interesting Excuses For Leaking Out... (1 Viewer)

I thinks it's high time everyone turned off their flamethrowers, huh? We're talking about a couple points in an artificial ranking system. Not worth a huge argument over.

Amem.... Wedge is a solid dude. If we're going to troll some chippers i have a few suggestions.

FWIW, I'm perfectly fine with the rule as is.

If you meant @Sprouty, I'm pretty sure his comments were tongue-in-cheek.

That said, I'm pretty sure @BGinGA was serious when he called me an asshole.

Meh. I've been called worse... Nothing to leak over.

To get us back on track.. The best I had was a couple of months ago. One of our regulars is a huge Saints fan. He sent me a text a couple of hours prior to the game to let me know that the Saints were playing like shit, so he started drinking at half-time. Now with half the bottle gone, he was in no condition to leave the couch, much less come to a poker game.

Of course, he was not nearly so verbose.. iirc the text went something like.. 'Saints are sucking, already drunk, not going to make the game'

Just to clarify: If @WedgeRock, as the host, has to cancel last minute for a death in the family, is the penalty...
  • 1 point for his not showing
  • 1 point for each player that now cannot show
  • 0 points - we're playing on G-maws coffin! (though a 1 point penalty for anyone that makes a "dead man's hand" reference without holding aces-and-eights).

I skipped this thread before. I figured it was about @Trihonda's incontinence issues....

6-person small stakes mixed game. Everyone confirms in the afternoon. Nice setup; table, chips, cards, drinks, sandwiches.
Boyfriend & girlfriend are no show / no call, leaving us with 4 players.

Turns out they decided to play 5/10 NLHE at a local underground club instead.

Bail on my game, leaving us short, to go play poker at a place you can play any night of the week? They were never invited again.

I 'm very much against the death penalty in peacetime, but I would reconsider in this case. :D
People so inconsiderate of others can, and actually wiill, commit any crime, genocide included:(

Well, that might be a little much, but I was pretty pissed b/c they knew full well that they were leaving us short.

Possibly the weirdest was a game just 2 months ago where the host flaked but we still played:

Another small stakes mixed game at my friend’s bartending school (which makes for a pretty good place to play b/c of the full bar!).

My friend calls me the day before and says he forgot that his whole family was taking his wife out for her birthday on the night of our game. o_O

So he arranged to get me the key the place, put a new 1/4 keg of IPA on tap and insisted we play without him.

He is still “invited back”. To his own place. :p

As a Louisiana Native, he's probably had plenty a night where this has happened to him! I feel sorry for his liver.

I also prep quite a bit of food. Personally, I think cancelling with less that 72 hours notice is pretty bad, because I shop for food on Thursday for a Saturday night game (Friday I work a 24 hour shift).

We're not talking hot dogs. Chicken breasts all the way up to steaks are on the menu, and can get pretty pricey. I understand things come up, but I hope the cancelling party realizes I've spent the money. I don't like wasting money.

Most unexpected leak ever came from one of my most consistent, regulalar, responsible and polite players. He texted 30 minutes before the game that "he couldn't make it" without explanations.
I forgave him, 'cause that was clearly a sinister wife-job (apparently, the poor man had forgotten to tell her).

Not poker, but one time our starting CF called 10 minutes before the championship game to bail because his kittens had gotten declawed that morning. Coach told him to "put the damn cats in a box and get out here." Surprisingly he showed up. We won, and he never played again.

Ive talked about this before in another context but for almost 4 years I had a weekly $2-4 or $3-6 limit game. Every Wednesday we had at least a full table sometimes two. Most of the players also played in AC. I don’t remember anyone ”leaking out” ever.

2005 rolls around and the Borgata offers NL cash for the first time. Everyone starts playing it and claiming how much better it is. They ask we change. I begrudgingly agree saying “you assholes better show up every week if you lose $300 in one hand“. To a person they dismissed my comment and said they would definitely be there every week...especially if it was NL.

Guess what? The excuses started coming after the first game. All the sudden people had to watch their kids, work late, go furniture shopping...you name it. The game ended up going to once a month...then once every few months than once in a while. It eventually went on pause for several years.

Now we have a new crew playing $.25/.50....just moved up to $.50/1 in the past year. $100 max buy in. We are playing at least once a month often twice and usually get a full table or close to it.

Moral of the story...people are all BS tough guys when it comes to poker.

Wedge never hosts anymore but if this happened we’d just move the game to my house.
I have been in this league for several years and believe it or not I had no idea this rule existed. I also think he and the other people who run this league are all great people. @WedgeRock is the definition of class to me.

Just bustin' Wedge's chops with a funny.

I've never met him, but I would like to someday. Since my entire family is in the Detroit-metro area, I have an excuse to come up... but then my entire family is there, so perhaps that's why I dont...

While the "loss of point rule" sounds heartless, I have no issue with it. Knowing a number of the people involved in the A2/Ypsi/SE MI group, if someone lost the championship by a point because of the death of a loved one, I'd be willing to bet the prize (if any) would be honorably chopped - rules be damned.

I do not understand this thread. These are excuses to get OUT of poker and drinking with your friends?

a much more useful thread is what excuses to go out FOR poker, as my wife is getting skeptical that I have this urgent work from 6pm-4am on random saturdays that the WiFi connection just can’t handle.

I do think you guys should have your committee decide on what constitutes a reasonable reason for not making a game.

I know it ended up being an aunt or something (I’d be pretty distraught if one of my aunts died), but this rule would apply if it was a sibling or child right?

It’s a terrible rule, and if you’re the definition of class, you’d know that. :)

I am glad that our weekly league games have grown to 16-20 players each week. I could care a less who shows and who doesn't. When we were bouncing between 9-12 players it was way more of a PITA trying to figure out if I should set up for 1 table or 2.

Same with any weekend games I have. For those I send out an invite to ~40 people and whoever shows up plays. Weekend tourneys are generally 2-3 tables, so I don't even ask if you are coming or not, I just invite you to play if you so choose.

We agreed it was a legit excuse... But when creating the rule, we wanted to take all discretion out of it. You cacel on less than 24 hours notice, you get a penalty.

Sounds harsh, but like I said, doing it once in a season won't have much affect.

I think it was like an aunt, out of state. It wasn't child/parent/sibling. So maybe not immediate family. I guess I meant extended family, not immediate family.

It's been the only harsh application in like 6 years.
You're a lawyer, use fine print *except at Tournament Director's discretion.

"Hey Bob and Nancy, sorry little Johnny died, tough luck it didn't happen on a Monday. Gonna have to dock you those points..."
Even if it was the only harsh application in 6 years, it would be much nicer to say "It was the only exception we've made it 6 years"

But in actuality if I had a child/spouse die, I likely wouldn't be playing cards anytime soon.
