Does the use of marijuana effect your home game? (2 Viewers)

I didn't expect to have such a good evening when I left the house. Up $450. Won another $15 at showdown.

If you like nice chips and a poker table with speed cloth and cup holders, then this game isn't for you.

Credit where it is due, the bank always comes out right.

Great way to fund your table & chips...then invite them at your game.

My earlier post may have come across as harsh, obnoxious and too judgmental, which is all true. The main point that I did not make really well, is that poker has become a game of edges. Players, overall, are far better skilled today. A player who is rolling a blunt or is engaged in any other activity that draws his or her attention away from the game is giving their opponents an edge, including carrying on a conversation when action is occurring at the table, which is a common practice when alcohol is being consumed, at least among members of my group.

In short, smoking marijuana while drinking and carrying on is likely not going to lead to a good outcome, rather predictable, in fact.

As far as the set-up, the tools of the trade are present. Some people drive a Maserati, others a Kia. One may not look as sharp, but they both will get you from point A to point B. And the players in the photos aren't any different than the chip collectors on this forum. As an example, I don't understand why they have a $10 chip and a $5 chip. I once asked the players at the table "Why don't we make the red chips $20?" Their response: "More chips."

Perfectly fine by me. I would rather have a $5 chip and a $10 chip in play any day than to have two different fracs for blinds.

If the reds are worth $10 why do they have a hot stamp that says $5? That is odd

The whites and blacks are marked a $1, but the whites are actually .50 chips. I couldn't give you the history to the chip set, as I am a relatively late member to the game.

I think it is better to play with a non-denom chip than a chip that has a denom printed on it that's not what it is being used for in the game (unless it's painfully obvious, like a $25 chip being used as a 0.25 frac). "I know it says $5 but it's really worth $10" is just unwise.

And if you're at the table consuming things that will impair your judgment and negatively affect your gameplay, then be prepared to lose your money. And that's okay, because we all play for different reasons, and for some people the money (or the skill) is not the point.

And, speaking as a health professional, there are probably no great health benefits to sticking something between your lips, setting it on fire, and inhaling the chemical products, no matter what you started with. I shall now fall off my soapbox.

Here's a story how the deadly reefer make me into a chore to play with at our homegame.

I usually have a puff during breaks and it hasn't effected me negatively. There are a few other people who puff and it doesn't impact them noticeably either.

A few weeks ago, playing cash and it's short handed. I think it was a 3bet pot with 3 to the flop. I'm button, v SB and BB. SB checks flop and for some reason I think the BB checked too as he's silent and just staring at his chips for like 20 seconds. I announce a bet and BB is like "woah woah, wait yer turn". I apologize and he bets the same amount I was going to. I then announce raise. SB folds and BB gets pissed that I raised here. I told him that we could get a ruling if I'm allowed to raise after acting out of turn (which you are not allowed to, at our local casino). BB says "naa F it" and jams. I call with top two and he shows flush draw. Run twice, I scoop. He's pissy about the raise and thinks I'm out of line. I don't think I am but I apologize again. Later that night I act out of turn against same player twice in the same hand. That was a wake up call.

But no no no. I'm hooked on the reefer and get baked for our next game which is a single table tournament. All is going well until I get 4bet jammed on by chip leader and for some reason I tank way too long with KK and call. I thought someone else was in the hand but evidently I still tanked for what I'm told was at least two minutes. It didn't seem like it to me but hey, reefer.

So I vowed (to myself) that next game I'd be sober the entire night for everyone else's benefit, hopefully. Haven't played since but I think we may play tonight. Stay tuned.

Over the years, I've played in a few games where cannabis has been consumed by some number of players. I've played in a few (including a game I used to host) where it was openly passed around at the table, and others where it was hastily consumed outside.

Its effects on the game are a mixed bag. Kinda like alcohol. It varies substantially from person to person.

Some people can handle it and still play competently (i.e., without holding up the game, not necessarily playing skillfully), and some can't. You can usually tell the people who can handle it, because they tend to be regular users who bring their own bud. When they come back from smoking, maybe they're a little mellower, but they keep up with the game and don't act stupid. Long-term use means minimal effects of intoxication; it's more like a mood stabilizer for regular users. People like this generally don't create any hassles.

The folks who are likely to create hassles are the ones who rarely smoke weed, like only at parties or whatever (and they consider your poker game a sort of party). Tony in seat 3 went out with the regular pothead to smoke a little, and now he keeps messing up his bets and has to be constantly reminded it's his action. Bonus points if he spills a drink on the table or knocks someone's stack over by accident. For the table of players who have to keep waiting for him to fumble through his turns, the only upside is that his skill level has probably been knocked down a peg or two. But overall, he's a burden to the game and is pissing people off, just like if he'd gotten sloppy drunk instead of stoned.

One major difference between cannabis and alcohol users: cannabis users will very rarely get aggressive about anything when they're high, unless they're inherently aggressive people in the first place. One of the more noteworthy effects of cannabis is that it tends to make people more relaxed and passive (keep this in mind while playing!). Booze, on the other hand ... well, I'm sure we all have a story or five about someone getting completely out of control due to alcohol.

There’s no smoking in my house. There is really only one player I know of who definitely plays stoned. He arrives early and gets good and baked in his (parked) car before the game. May toke up some more during breaks. I have no problem with either cigarettes or weed as long as it is outdoors, and people use the ashtray on the steps.

The stoner is not a very good player, but I don’t know whether to attribute that to the weed or just him being... not good. I can’t imagine it helps. He gets a little distracted sometimes, but then plenty of people who are cold sober forget what the blinds are, or don’t notice when the action is on them.

Drunk players are a bigger potential problem IMHO. I only have had a couple of instances where someone really got loaded at the game. One guy played much better than usual, won a bunch of money, was in a great mood, and I insisted that someone drive him home. Another time someone drank way too much and got really belligerent on the late side when someone sucked out on him in a big cash hand. He got not just angry, but threatening. Though the guy he threatened was probably the worst person to go after (big tough farmer, gun owner), so we all mainly were laughing at him. But still I did to ask him to leave (luckily he already had a ride waiting). He took a break from the game and then apologized to me and the player he berated, and we had him back.

This has been the worst thread for in-game pics.

Mojo, if you really thought dice chips, with the wrong denoms, on a beat-up dining table, full of stoners were worthy of posting, I have two words for you...

"Contact High"

You can probably deduct by the pictures that a poker table and casino grade chips do not top their list. There is so much more that a person can spend their hard earned cash on, such as papers, a bong, vaporizer, etc.

I feel your pain, which is why I bought a set of DDM's. They are less expensive than a set of Paulson's and they hold up well on beat up dining room tables, plus the players in my group like them.

Here is a picture from last year

$1/$2 dealer's choice: NLHE, NLOmaha-Hi.

Wait.... Reds are $10 but are stamped $5?

Yes. Someone addressed this earlier in the thread. The set the group used at the time was a hodge-podge collection of white, blue, black, red and green dice chips, roughly 300 in total, which explains why they improvised instead of going by the denominations.

Whites: .50
Blue/Black: $1
Greens: $5
Reds: $10

The values of the colors were never an issue, even for the stoners.

I actually considered ordering a $10 chip for the DDM set, but ultimately it made more sense to stick with the traditional $5, $20 denoms.

First, I did it once and will never again. Lots of fun but less than profitable...
Second, you sure that was weed? Maybe he smoked handrolled cig or something. I pretended once to be drunk during the game.. People were calling me like crazy in all right moments.. Maybe he was doing the same
