I’m starting a dictionary of poker terminology. Partly to help newbies, partly as a refresher and mainly because I’m sitting in an airport bored out my mind.

Please feel free to add to this…

Today’s entry from the World Poker Dictionary is the word RIVER

“River: noun, usually the last card of a community game in poker. Named after the river of tears you will cry when it’s revealed. When playing circus games the river will pair with another community card 99% of the time and boot you square in the balls.”

You've seen our glossary right?

Anything you post here, that's not in there, I'll add to the Glossary

When a player uses string to slide chips into the pot.

Freeroll - where you scoop your opponent on the river because you had out(s).

Big Blind Ante: supposedly speeds up gameplay in tournaments by getting the player in the big blind to post another big blind equal to the value of the antes.
In reality it’s yet another boot in the stones when you’re hanging on in a tournament by your pinky fingernail and the dealer helpfully reminds you that your big blind is double the amount that you thought it was, meaning that you’re now having to push with utter shite in the hope that you get lucky(1).

(1) FYI you don’t get lucky; you get another boot to the stones and get knocked out on the bubble

Omaha - where you call the smallest amount possible, flop the nuts, jam the pot till all the stacks go in and the river brings the 3rd spade and pairs the board.
