I've hosted one true mixed cash game. I feel it went over pretty well and a nice change from the normal .25-.25 NLHE all night games we've always played.

I decided on the orbit +1 rule but had one thing I'd like to fix. We used a $1 Dealer Ante instead of .25 from every player for simplicity and I felt it "fit" our game better. Also had a .25 bring in and then $1 small and $2 big bets. This creates an issue where the person who calls for a stud type game to pay an extra $1 than everyone else since they are the dealer for the first and last hand of that particular game. I know it's not a big deal at all but I don't want players to be discouraged from calling that type of game due to that. Would it be better to change the game on the same person every orbit or change the rule to where the very last hand of Stud type games use the traditional everyone Ante rule? Which would create everyone paying $1.25 in antes instead of 7 players paying $1 and one player paying $2. It's just an OCD thing for me to have everything as close to perfectly equal as possible. Not a big deal at all at my stakes but would become a bigger deal at higher stakes. Thoughts?

Generally dealer ante is used when you don't have fracs. Since you have quarters in play why not make everyone ante.

Yes Yes Yes! A pot with 8 quarters is much more interesting than a pot with two $1.00's.

The answer to ^that^ issue is to use individual antes. The dealer ante is for convenience purposes, although it also works out pretty equal over the long run. Certainly not worth sweating over imo.

Would it be better to....change the rule to where the very last hand of Stud type games use the traditional everyone Ante rule?
I most certainly would not do that. Consistency is much more important. Either all dealer antes or all individual antes, but not a mix of both on the same game orbit. /shudders/

If you really want to keep the dealer ante then it may be fun to make the winner of the 2nd last hand the mandatory bringin for the last hand of the rotation. A sort of minikill. At least that would randomize who pays the extra buck, and it would come from a winning pot.

For a very brief period I did orbit + 1, but switched to full orbits after 2-3 games . The game changes when the deal reaches the same person, while the game choice rotates around the table. It's rare that the game is selected by the wrong person, and when it does, it's simple to make the adjustment on the next orbit. Simple = best.

When playing full orbits, every player plays every position exactly once. For stud games this facilitates dealer antes, and for blinds games there is an equal distribution of positional advantage. With orbit + 1, an astute player will probably call something like PLO where the positional advantage is relatively high.

Mainly trying to keep every game type called to play as equal to each other as possible. The norm for these guys is .25-.25 blinds which is obviously .50 total for one orbit. If everyone Ante .25 every hand on an 8 man rotation it would be a $2 per orbit. I also would get tired of reminding the same few guys that they haven't ante'd yet. So it's for a couple reasons really.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Calling Stud in the orbit +1 dealer Ante scenario costs more and isn't at all advantageous positionally as PLO or Big O would be.

I kind of thought that mixing it up like that wouldn't be popular. Thanks for the response.
