Custom & Semi-Custom Sets (2 Viewers)

Oh man... those are incredible!!

If you watch the classifieds here long enough you may be able to snag a set. That’s how I got mine:

So, this may be bordering on unorthodox or maybe even inappropriate, so I’ll certainly remove the comment if need be, but would it be frowned upon to put out feelers in the classifieds section to see if there are members who might want to sell chips in the future? I know that, at this moment, I wouldn’t be able to afford a set, but it definitely looks like it’s worth chasing down. However, if I should just wait until I can afford them then I will absolutely do so. Thanks everyone for your responses and for putting up with my newbie questions!

I wouldn’t expect you to get much in the way of response. People buy and sell frequently and things change hands a lot. People have privately messaged me or even publicly commented saying “hey if you ever sell pleas keep me in mind etc”. And I do try to remember those situations. Also if I pick something up in the classifieds and someone follows behind me with “backup” I usually try to go back to those classifieds when I am ready to sell it and offer to those people before re-listing on the classifieds. So it doesn’t hurt to make friends and make your intent known unless it is a really scarce set. It wouldn’t be bad but I think that is better communicated directly than by posting a classified for future desires.

I don't see any harm in posting a wanted ad though. When I (rarely) sell things that are wanted I try to check the wanted classified ads because I don't like how almost every sale is a dibs sale.

Do you mind if I shoot you a quick PM?? I just have a couple of questions I’d like to ask you. I’m certainly not trying to pry those chips out of your hands. ;)

No worries. This is my grail set. There's probably a better chance to be struck by a meteor than me deciding to sell them. :ROFLMAO:

PM away.

Sure nothing wrong with it. Since he was looking to purchase in the future, not now, I just meant to suggest it may be more productive to reach out to people directly with the sets you are interested in to strike up a relationship.

I should really get some of the TH&C chips as samples as well since the only Paulsons I’ve handled so far are the RHCs. Man, does that mold look sweet!

I'd for sure take it in and do your research. It's a lot of fun. There isn't a huge reason to rush!

Think this is my biggest takeaway to this point, outside of get samples. Think the problem is though it totally conflicts (Assuming here) against the mindset of someone signing up. You sign up trying to become informed, and purchase a set. It appears to me that is much easier said than done. I've missed on a couple sets already, and it's a little disheartening.

So perhaps someone can riddle me this? How do you go about pairing up the chips that will likely need to be purchase by the Rack, and Barrel. How are seeing the blend of edge spots? Ie I love these Aurora Starss if I jump on a Rack like that, how do I foresee what the next Rack needed is? How do I map a path? That's my struggle at this point.

Thank you! I have been looking at CPC’s pricing for sure! I definitely need to get color samples, and I’d really like to grab some FDL mold chips to see what they feel like. From what I’ve seen, they look the closest to Paulson RHC chips in that there is a larger inlay space that is also smooth, so I would be interested in checking some out! Thanks for the warm welcome!

You can do a whole lot of research on chips, colors and designs by making lineups on your computer.

As an example: Once you have an idea that you want leaded THC, then you look for chips. Many sets start because an individual fell in love with one specific chip. Here is a lineup I made yesterday because I’m searching for a possible replacement for a blue chip from the original set.

Does that adequately answer your question or did I misread your post?

This is a great idea! I really love the Tonkawa $5’s so I may do the same thing to see what works well with that chip. I’ve already found that I really like the thin edge spots as opposed to thicker ones, so I’ll be on the lookout for chips that fit the bill in that regard. Thanks so much!

Yes that helps for sure.

So if I''m @chipsncoffee I would start by playing around. These were some of the first thoughts that came to mind. I dont know if I would go with these exact chips, but if I did I would be murdering them to make a label. The black would be a $20 chip. And I would look for a solid RHC chip for a 25c chip. I just threw this together as an example.

Then you can go after the chips of your choosing. Then, if you don't like the way they look together irl you ditch them then go to the next idea. Designing a semi-custom or mixed set is very fun in this way. Many many members have dedicated threads where they kinda go through this process. It's time consuming, but I think it is fun. Also inexpensive until you put your money down.

I understand the desire to jump in with both feet, but I’d advise you to take your time. First, the more you learn the more your tastes will evolve and gel. Second, you’ll get a feel for who’s who on the forum and be able to triangulate opinions and advice. Third, you’ll have a much better understanding of availability, value and pricing.

Some of the chips mentioned already are stunningly expensive, and you need to be sure you’re making a purchase that you’ll be happy with and that is at an appropriate price.

Also, there have been some fantastic offerings of whole casino racks recently, at amazing prices (the chip room, among others), which would enable you to get a great set at a much better price.

Also, we do a lot of buying/selling by reputation here, so it is important to know who you are dealing with. This prevents or minimizes crooked behavior, but still, buyer beware. Also, the longer you’re here and the more you contribute, the more likely you’ll find that someone gives you a great deal. That said, there are many very generous folks here, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself receiving gestures of kindness.

Tl;dr: Take your time, surf the site, read a lot, learn a lot. Buy a great set.

Thank you very much for your insight! There’s no doubt that I am being a bit overzealous. Since logging back on for the first time this past week since October of last year, I’ve just been going crazy looking at all the different chips out there. Like I said, I did also get some samples of China clays and a barrel of RHC Paulsons, so there are definitely more chips to check out such as CPC and ceramic hybrids. I’m not entirely sure what a ceramic hybrid entails just yet, but I am certainly looking into it!

Again, thank you for the advice! If I may, and this may be a silly question, but how can I establish myself as a standup, reputable member here without having made any sales or purchases? I’d love to hear what you think about that!

Also, I want to give a quick shout out to @k9dr for allowing me to use his incredible photo as my avatar! Thanks Mark!
