COVID-19 (Corona virous) and your home game? (4 Viewers)

Alabama teens are playing the COVID game. They sell tickets to a huge gathering where several people that tested positive also show up. 1st people to test positive wins the ticket money. Several people here might want to participate

This would be funny, if it wasn't so fucking infuriatingly stupid and dangerous to others.

Every state in the country besides Connecticut and Rhode Island had increases in COVID cases this week. It’s growing like wildfire in a few big states.

It’s hardly over.

Let’s just be clear: neither Florida Man nor Alabama Teens are naturally occurring phenomena.

That level of special is carefully bred over generations.
HEY! I resent that remark.

Many Florida transplants like myself are perfectly capable of being Florida Men. Breeding has nothing to do with it.

For the record, any Florida Man stories that come from the Panhandle really don't count. We refer to that part of the state as "Lower Alabama."
I’ve been to Alabama and Pensacola. Everyone I met told me they were Scottish... then proceeded to demonstrate they weren’t by being unable to pronounce their surnames  :ROFLMAO:

One guy was called Cochrane and I swear it sounded like cock-ring when he said it

Just curious, anyone heard how many deaths The Models are predicting from these rises? They have to have improved these things with at least some data by now.

The madness spreads further south. My great grandmother was a MacLean of Duart - her parents came here from Scotland in the early 20th century.

But I know how to pronounce it - "mick lane," right? ;)

I just have to admit how jealous I am of poker games starting up.

I wish I had the minerals to start up, but I can't. I am scared shitless. Not for others, but for myself.

Isn't it just a tad irresponsible to start a social activity like Poker? Given the conditions?

It just seems the apathy for this pandemic is really setting in and we haven't beaten anything.

I'm maybe not up on current events, but poker just seems a bit reckless at the present time.

Just my opinion of course. I play in 5 clubs total, including my own. 2/5 of those clubs have started up. It's a tough tough exercise to refuse invitations. Very tough. Even tougher to refuse requests to start my own game, despite all these chips I got, that need to be used..

I just don't understand what triggered the startup of home poker.

A poker friend compiles a daily COVID spreadsheet, which he publishes on Facebook... Here is his most recent one, from this morning:

Scotland is still pretty much in lockdown. England has eased some restrictions a few weeks ago and already has 5 times the infection rate of Scotland. The only part of Scotland where there’s been an increase is on the border with England.
The tricky thing is getting a balance between totally eradicating the virus by continuing a strict lockdown (which is pretty much impossible) and restarting the economy... and that’s kind of where the UK is right now.
From over here the US looks absolutely mental. I don’t really understand why people are acting as though the virus has gone.
Anyway the main thing is that I hope that everyone on here is staying safe.

I used to be fanatical about poker (2004-2010).

Then lost total interest until recently. Seems like I couldn't have picked a worse time to be wanting to play poker.

Relatively speaking, I live in one of the best places (Edmonton) on this continent in terms of Covid. As of 07/05/20, there are 1088 confirmed cases for the city (and suburb areas) of which 240 are active. Population is roughly 1.5 million. Due to the low numbers Edmonton will be the host city for the NHL Stanley Cup. If there's any place that's safer to play poker, it's Edmonton right?

Local casinos are projecting an August 1 date of reopening their poker rooms. The chief medical officer has final authority so we will have to wait and see if that actually happens. Casinos are actually open now but it's just slot machines (no table games).

My small 1/1 game ran about a month ago as a test run after a long hiatus. We gauged interest. Plenty of hand sanitizer and face masks at the table.

We had a full table and the usual banter, laughs, and drinks. We were having a great time. Each week since there has been minimal interest and game hasn’t run since but it may also have to do with summer schedules. We shall see...

Still only going to have one table for cash or tournament, but I'm increasing my threshold to 8 maximum from 6 starting in September provided nothing changes. Still requiring face coverings and hand washing before sitting down and upon leaving the table without any exception.

I’m still not hosting here in the Hudson Valley, and don’t expect to host again until late winter/early spring, barring a cure or vaccine..

Especially with schools reopening. About 1/4 of my regulars have kids in grade school or high school, increasing the chances of them bringing the virus home to their parents.

Everything could go fine for weeks... All it takes is one night where some asymptomatic carrier infects the whole group, like one of those choirs.

Masks and handsanitizing are good measures, but 12-18 guys in an enclosed space, talking and swapping chips for 4-7 hours? No way.

The way I tried to explain it to someone with whom I serve on the board of an educational group, which normally hosts two meetings per week for students:

We both wager $1,000. You pick a number from 1-1,000 out of a hat.

If it’s #1-999, you take $1,000 profit; if you draw #1,000, it’s mine.

You’d take that bet all day long.

But if the terms instead were #1-999 you win, #1,000 you *die.*

... I doubt any sane person takes the bet.

Just one game here since February: A four-player $10 tourney:D between people who anyway meet regularly for work or pleasure.
Attempted to do the same involving a two-couple scheme, as an extension of dinner, in order to educate partners / spouses.
Disaster.
"Recruits" were rather intimidated by the complexity of the game, while some can't even grab and shuffle a f*ckin deck of cards properly, treating it rather with fear, like an unpinned hand grenade.
