Just picked up these Paulson's on eBay. 25 G Dubs and the seller threw in the Honest Abe as a bonus...cool dude. Sorry for the sideways pics...still learning my way around the site. The Washingtons are mint, the lone Abe looks like its had some shuffling.

Does anyone know how these special edition Paulson's come about? I see Paulson's with Zodiac, dogs, Indian chiefs etc. I doubt Paulson is making 100,00+ runs of these chips. Do people somehow acquire blank chips and customize them?

This was from the good ol' days when Paulson was still catering to the home market, and before they were taken over by GPI and ditched the TH&C molds for the PAULSON CHIPS mold.

They did all kinds of special chipsets back then: Old West, Presidents, Sports, Cars, Zodiacs, Le Cove's, Scandia, Isthmus, etc., etc., etc.

Then came GPI, and the home market chips were discontinued. Then slowly booted up again with the Paulson Classics, the new line of Isthmus chips, National Poker Series, and the hotstamped Grand Cardroom on the PAULSON CHIPS mold. Most of these were created by Apache Poker Chips I believe. Then a guy over at Chiptalk (forgot his name) designed the Pharaoh's which were also made with the Paulson Chips mold. After that the World Top Hat & Cane chips came out with the Suits mold, and the Grand Cardroom and Pharaoh's were made on those molds as well. Sidepot.com then created the Le Paulson Noir chips on a custom pineapple/scroll mold, and Apache Poker Chips had new edgespot combinations made for hot stamped chips (notably the new Grand Cardroom and Avalon chips), also allowing for custom hotstamps for a while (like the PNY and PCA quarters).

And then everything was shut down for the public, and GPI decided to only create chips for casino's. That's where we're at now, and it's a sad thing. But there's always a chance that they'll start producing for the home market again some time in the future, but I think there would have to be a second poker boom for that to happen. (Or new management).

Close, although not totally accurate..... mostly chronological errors, but a few other minor ones as well.

Not totally sure of Apache's involvement with PAULSON CHIPS mold Classics or NPS (which was designed by J5), but I think those were both Trademark Poker projects --- and the Grand Cardroom chips were never stamped on that mold. GCR was initially offered on BCC chips (two different molds, flame and TFP).

After the card pip (suits) mold was introduced (World THC), Apache worked with Trademark and offered hot-stamped chips on that mold using stock GPI/Paulson home market colors/spots (no solids were available): Avalons, High Rollers, stock die and custom hot-stamps, and a few one-off chips (Bahama, PNY, and PCA fracs, and much later the THC frac). Sidepot's Noir line used chips from the same pool of stock GPI/Paulson home market colors/spots (typically drawn from the NPS and World THC lines).

It wasn't until later that 2nd-best Josh offered to work with Josh @ apache and the CT group buy for Paulson GCR chips was born (first-time-available solid colors on the card pip mold). No spotted Paulson GCR chips were ever produced. Apache also opened up the five solid colors for stock die and custom hot-stamps with a 1000-chip minimum order. Apache's offerings were brokered through Trademark Poker, one of the few non-casino companies that deals directly with GPI.

Ah, yes -- I think those might have been Apache's first offering on the card pip mold.

As Mr. Tree predicted, I broke down and bought the 50 Paulson Lincolns. The seller threw in 4 additional Lincolns plus the Good Luck and Key West Chips. I really like the color of the Lincolns. I don't know if the pics do them justice. I wouldn't classify the chips simply as "red". It's almost like they are 90% red with 10% fluorescent pink thrown in to make them really pop.

So now my main chip set consists of 300 grey PCR non-denom (as $1) and then the red and green presidents as 5s and 25s. Looking for a black chip that catches my eye for a 100.

Also on my introduction post I have a cool set of 200 Binion's Horseshoe 1s 5s and 25s.

Lol someone caving and buying more chips around here is the safest snap call you will ever make.

I.

I feel like this timeline should be stickied. It's fascinating that the GPI decision to exit the home market kicked off this huge secondary market for trading/selling Paulsons but their management team doesn't see enough upside to deal with "civilian" buyers any more. I do think that inevitably GPI comes back around....if you're running a public company there's just too much pressure to grow revenue. There's probably already a PowerPoint deck circulating headquarters with a business case and financial projections for a new home player line.

When I was first getting into poker/chips in the 90s you could walk in to the Paulson store in Atlantic City and just buy these things. Custom sets too! Somewhere I have a receipt for a hot stamped custom set I had made back then. One of my biggest regrets is selling that.
