I have always been more into playing poker rather than collecting poker chips. For me, poker chips always seemed to be dirty, and simply a piece of equipment like a hockey stick or chess piece. In other words, I never really cared and would prefer online over live; however, recently, I've become really obsessed with some high -end pokerchips. So I guess my question to all my fellow chippers is this, how many of you are into simply collecting poker chips over playing and getting better at the game? I assume many strike a balance and love poker, but then I also have a feeling there's quite a few collectors on the forum as well. Just curious and hope to hear some feedback!

My love of poker chips is purely for playing. There is nothing I love more than having buddies over to try out new chip sets or hear guys say, "These are sweet chips!" It's just a ton of fun to splash around with cool chips that make the game more fun. I haven't found enjoyment int he collection side of things. And I have a nice juicy bank account because of that :)

I have lots of "working man" chips, not for show. Just for down and dirty fun playing!

Poker is first; Playing poker with nice chips makes it firster.
I second this. I really enjoy playing poker. Playing with nice chips adds an extra element to the experience. I'm lucky to live in an area with a lot of active chippers. So including playing with my own Paulson chips (relabel, Jacks, RH 43mm, soon to be LL tourney), I get to play with boat chips, CPC, CPS, and Pharoahs at @T_Chan's game and recently played with Rounders CPC at @Jeevansluck's game. I will play with dice chips if I have to, but definitely reduces enjoyment factor.

And I buy all my chip sets to play with! I do collect some singles to look at. I figure when I eventually bite the dust my chips will either sit in storage somewhere or be sold off for much less than I paid for.

Yeah, forgot to mention that I also play with any playable set I have.
I only may collect singles or sample sets for exceptional reasons. Not a collector though, by any serious criterion.

It's important to point out, while I've been labeled a "hoarder" of some sort, I have felted my Jacks AND my AS Tournament stamps. The latter more than once. Obviously, I have extraneous cash sets, that don't get used.

Grant, if you play enough of my games, you will see other chips I will throw down. I also don't have a group that will play cash, so through no fault of my own, other than my penchant to own, I have sets waiting to be used.

I am a bit of both, for the present, but it will be only time and opportunity that dictates how and when they get used

I collect playable sets so that I can put them into play... ;-)

I agree with the others... “I really enjoy playing poker. Playing with nice chips adds an extra element to the experience”

And because I don’t get to play very often (4-5 times a year), chipping allows me an outlet that’s at least poker related to distract me between games.

What you will find here is high levels of denial. Occasionally hosting games is justification for owning thousands of chips! :)
This is so true. It’s like those multi million dollar homes. By the looks of some of them you just know the owner only spent a few days a year in them. Basically they are just a show peice. I think this is really evident with chips. I hardly doubt that those who own 20 sets really make full use of them. Not knocking on anyone. We all have our passion

I am not knocking anyone either, I just find it funny. I am sure any of the serious collectors if really honest with themselves know it is true as well :)

Hence, the wise Muslim limit to 4 wives :D for laymen.
Sultans and other high-ranking functionaries with endless harems are much closer to collectors of any items.:D
A girl in a harem (usually a slave, abducted from her family whom she would never see again) would be lucky to have intercourse with the Ruler once in her fertility life-span and gain His preference (not to mention the genes).
This was plain barbarous, and, while it's still not about people, but rather about clay objects, I wouldn't like it happening to chips, anyway.:)

When i started collecting (air jordans and lebrons) it was all about having the shoes in my possesion and showing them off in a display. I would never ever wear them, because they would get dirty and wouldnt be as nice anymore. So i kept lots of shoes in dark boxes under the bed. Samething with my playing card collection. Still got a deck of all the decks i have bought sealed and stored. But as iam getting older and hopefully wiser, i started to wear my shoes. It still does kinda hurt when i wear them the first time and will be "broken" in. But it is much more fun i learned. And its the sameway with chips for me, i really like to show them and get a game going with a set, but at the sametime iam thinking oh my they will never be mint again. On the other side its a reason to look for more chips...

I find it interesting to hear everyone's opinion on the matter. I recently purchased a used set and it looks like they've never been played. To me, that's the whole point of having nice chips! To show them off and shuffle them! Lol

Before this Coronavirus hit we were playing 2-3x a week. But I only put a set of CPC Atlantic Clubs there and then brought over new sets on occasion to play with.

I’ve realized, I don’t like putting my high dollar sets on the table too often. It’s better to enjoy it once in awhile.

Buying a reasonably priced mint set of chips is the smartest way to go about it. Like buy a set of Jacks and just play with those and not worry about it.

There simply aren't any rules. There ain't no "Hoyle" book on how you must collect or peruse poker chips. We all have our goals and desires. To each their own in their own righteous way.

Long live the hobby, in whatever form the hobbyist will make it

I have always been a “gamer” with poker being the one I love the most and for the longest. I will take live play over online every day. I love my sets of chips and have been very fortunate to be pretty profitable at poker to by more of them.

While I always want Paulson chips, a custom table, and Gasser chairs, if the action is good and company is better I’ll play at a kitchen table with paper cards and dice chips if I have to.

I am going to get back into hosting home games again after over a 10 year break. In anticipation of hosting games I am getting a Custom CPC set with a both cash and a STT set and will put them into play. The One thing I do collect is Dealer Buttons though. I just enjoy all the different custom DBS. I do have a CC Pharaoh set that has seen little use. And I have probably thousands of custom labeled Diamond Suited chips I used when I Hosted Tournaments and needed enough chips for The MTTs and for the cash game afterwards. While I still have those and they hold a special place in my heart those probably will never see the felt again. As far as all these rare GB and Paulson and TRK sets I stay away from them because my wallet can’t afford for me to collect something like poker sets and I always wanted a custom set since I first joined. It was my thought if I was going to spend a lot on a set it would be for my own custom set.

I do both. I enjoy collecting because I love the search for chips that are hard as hell to find; like TRK Deadwoods.

Like most, I absolutely LOVE playing with fantastic chips as well. The best is when I have enough to doth--stash some away for collecting and put some of those babies in play.

I collect Piatnik and have David Blaine Split Spades. The letter just for value, want to sell them when they earn some value. But no deck gave me more pleasure than decks I play poker with. Started with necessity, joined pack of guys playing poker. But playing with rugged paper cards and plastic chips was no fun, or maybe not fun enough. So I reorganized the game. New chips, plastic cards and so on.
For me cards you are not using are useless cards. Buying decks you not gonna even open is a waste of money
