Hi all!

With classic poker chips the only way to buy new premium stamped or inlayed chips, has anyone seen what their resale value can be compared to Paulson or Chipco? Can't really find any used ones on eBay, maybe the branding is to general of a name?

Best,
Greg

being that the sets are Custom Designed. Many players hold on to them. Those that are for sale are available in the breakdown as made, sometimes that also includes the design to be able to order add-ons otherwise that is also exclusive to the original order maker. Some sets sell for more than they cost due to an outstanding desirable design. Most sell for less if you can find them, then it depends if the breakdown works for you as well. I ordered a custom set myself in my Sloth design which I think its very old fashioned and underground-ish with simple level 1 edge-spots in the standard colors with brass flakes. Many other players may not appreciate my design or find the set to big for their own use but it is exactly what I wanted.

You can buy the Rounders, Atlantic etc... chips directly from CPC (here)with their stock designs which are slightly cheaper than if you were to order the same colour/design/edgespot of the same as part of a custom set.

If you are looking at your chips retaining or appreciating in value (ie sticking with inflation +/-) I suggest buying Casino Paulson's or like buying a car once you drive it off the lot......

Nearly all cpc sets I've seen sold on the classifieds in my time on here went for considerably less than what they cost the original buyer.
I'm sure though there were deals not out in public where the original buyer got his money back or maybe even turned a profit, but the prices I saw cpcs go for on the classifieds were heartbreaking.

That could also be true for Paulsons yet I have not seen them lose half of their value after using them on a couple of games.

The big difference is availability.
Anybody can order a fresh CPC set with the breakdown and lable design of his choosing.
The only advantage of buying used is that you don't have to wait a few months to get them.
Most are not 100% happy with someone else's lable design, choice of edgespot patterns/colors and breakdown so it's way more efficient to just get what you think is best.

The same thing is not true for Paulsons.

You can find many past sales here on the forum. The stock chip sets like Rounders or Atlantic Club retain more of their value. In Exc condition they might retain like 75% of their value. Less for lesser conditions. Custom sets vary but I would expect 50% resale value assuming the breakdown is good and the design is decent.

Logically it make sense that CPC Set are sold for Lesser since you buying them At mint and selling them at used
But physically that makes no sense as CPCs only get better when broke in! In mint condition they are awful to shuffle, but after a few games they start to round off ever so slightly and become amazing to play!

Not necessarily saying worth more after the break in, but ai would be appreciative if this process was already taken care of when I bought the chips! Lol

When I received the message about purchasing the Silver Tounged Devil Scrown CPCs I trully couldn't believe it! There is no way my stupid non artistic self could ever produce something so amazing! They are by far my favorite hip design I have ever seen.

So in my opinion the option to purchase the set (brand new and un used BTW) for full price, plus the rights to the design were absolutely worth while, if not worth more as I do not have to spend hours designing and picking the perfect chips for me as it is already taken care of.

I guess we could all look at it differently, but I personally viewed it as the "deal of a lifetime!" Resale value? Well I really don't care as I can not see any reason why I would ever let these go!

Biggest factor here IMO is keeping them generic! As soon as you go for "Joe's card room" or "Boston Poker Palace" you are making them very specific and would destroy potential resale value... unless there is another person Named Joe, or if someone actually liked Boston. Lol that is my largest piece of advice if going with customary and not sure you plan to keep them as a forever set. Keep it generic and preferably with a palm tree in the design... quite popular around here and I may be a potential customer! Haha

And within the genericness, mold is a big factor as well. Sure, theme and inlays are important but they can easily be relabeled. I've seen more than one wonderfully designed sets for sale, but using the A mold which to me is "meh", and that part I can't change on a chip.

One of the many reasons I would take them back is because the theme works perfectly for the b mold. @p5woody did a fantastic job with the design. Hell, who doesn't love a cool, quarter pie set...........Damnt, now I want another bourbon inlaid set lol

Yeah, and that is why I actually did consider that set. The B mold works perfectly there and I'd keep it as is!

Absolutely, again the perfect design that speaks to you or fits your needs again definitely carries value as well.

To @LeGold point... the B mold is not my favorite, but it is perfect for the Bourbon theme. I absolutely live quarter pie sets but have heard many who are not a fan of the concept... again what makes this hobby awesome is that we trully do not all have to love the same thing. When I saw the Bourbon Basements available and no one biting I couldn't believe it, financially I was in a tough spot at the time bit decided I had to find a way to make it work! To me, for that price I would have thought they would have been snatched up in minutes... even before the hobby went crazy.

Probably making the journey to SQM with us. Perfect single table set in a small case (Apache 2800) plays and travels perfectly and tons of compliments so far!

I have an A mold set and B on the way. Don’t think I’d ever use those molds unless it fit the name/theme of the set. Not because I don’t like the mold, just because it looks odd to me. Biff Tannen’s Pleasure Paradise would look odd on A mold and Andy & Red’s Casino Cruises would look odd on B mold ha.

But they would both look sexy AF on the CSQ mold! Lmao

Cantinas on the "H" mold For the Win!!
