Hi everyone, have been playing holdem for years and just got a new table and set of ceramic chips...

Unfortunately I discovered Paulson's and know I will soon be sinking a ton of cash into a tournament set all to soon. If anyone has advice for me on the set or series to try and collect I would appreciate it.

Stay safe y'all...

I’m hoping and praying that Jim with thechiproom has a new sale around the corner with some great priced chips / sets. We’ll… I always am haha.

Welcome to PCF! What part of Texas are you in?

Welcome fellow Texan! Same question as Ethan. Also when is your next game so we can help you break in that new table!

Hello and welcome!
Thanks!

Hey Ethan, thanks for the heads up on 'thechiproom', I will keep an eye out for it. We live in Celina Tx.

Haha, my buddy owns a cabinet company and he also makes custom furniture. He built the poker table cores for a big company I won't mention. Gave me one of the demos and I am redoing the felt and changing it up. We play on our covered back porch over looking the fishing pond. I need a catchy name for some custom chips. A beaver just dropped a tree on my boat dock and boat so we are thinking something with along 'Angry Beaver' or 'Stupid Beaver Poker Room'. All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds good! Wish you were closer to Houston. Seems like all the interesting locations for home games are around Dallas...

Keep us updated on the table. Would love to see pics! And I think you are onto something for your customs. I like Angry Beaver! Are you going to do relabels, custom CPCs or ceramics?

Initially I want to find and build a set of Paulson's. I have not idea on which style? Aurora Star, Big Top or what, guess I have some research todo... I am definitely interested in doing a tourney set of custom CPCs...

OK, you are talking big boy league now. I'll step out. LOL! since this bug bit me 2 years ago, I've accumulated 9 playable sets, but they are all in the inexpensive range - china clays, cards mold ceramics and some lesser, older. casino used Paulson THC chips that I plan to relabel one of these days. Aurora Stars and BTPs will be some serious coin. Good luck to you. I believe there are a couple of BTP sets in the classifieds right now if you are ready.

Haha, thanks for the warning. Not worried about spending the coin. It's about the fallout when my wife sees the bill...

Welcome! Good luck with your search for Paulson's. I will say, I bought Royals for our tournament games and Pharaoh's for our cash games, and both have been really stellar chips for our group. I know Paulson's would be better, but if your budget is tight, China clays are a great option.

$25k ???

Obviously I have over estimated my ability to play with the big boys. I will embarrassingly slide away from this game and avoid eye contact with anyone at the table...
LOL! I suspected you hadn't seen those yet. Don't worry, you can still find some really cool Paulson sets for WAY less than that. Nice sets hit the classifieds almost every day. You just have to be quick when there is a good deal, so study up so you will recognize them when they come around. Or you can piece a set together one denomination at a time. If you're going to relabel, that might be a better approach. Solids are typically pretty reasonable and easy to find. Then the prices go up as the colors and edge spots get more interesting. And then there's RHC vs THC. THC is generally pricier, often a LOT pricier.

Here's a nice RHC set that is MUCH cheaper than the BTPs. This is also a good example of chips that were sold in a Chip Room sale. (last year, I think?) There are a lot of these floating around so it wouldn't be too hard to add on if this set is not big enough.

Just got a sample pack of two types of Paulson's and one of the Royal's. Honestly, those Royal's are pretty dang sweet. I think they are around .55 a chip as well.

Ok, I owe you one. I can now breath again. I may grab a full set of Royals for my game play and piece together the Paulson's just to collect... Thanks so much!

Royals do hit the classifieds every now and then if you are not in a hurry. As well as other china clays.

Thats a great idea. I can see how this might get addicting. I purchased a set of slowplay ceramic chips for my holdem game with my buddies to have some chips. They are very nice ceramics, exceptionally nice actually.

Now I am thinking a second set of Royals for my potential 2nd table.

Then there is the Paulson set just to have...

...and eventually a set of CPC with our group name and colors. Of course, I don't know that group name yet. Hoping if I post some pictures to the site of where we play on the back porch y'all can help me come up with a funny name...

Definitely! Start a new thread with something about looking for a design or theme. It will get some good traffic.

If you don't absolutely need that second set, I'd recommend putting it off and spending a little time on here checking out the endless options. Even though Royals are reasonably priced, if you buy brand new at retail, you won't get your money back when you replace them with customs. If you grab a used set on here, either china clay or less expensive Paulsons like the Horseshoe set I linked above, you'll be able to resell fairly easily at about the same price.

If you haven't seen cards mold ceramics yet, that is also another option for inexpensive chips, including customs. We organize Group Buys (GBs) here pretty regularly and order large quantities direct from the manufacturer in China. I just wrapped up a GB for a huge number of Aria casino tribute chips. Cards mold chips run about 35 cents each, and are an incredible value. They are really nice for the price.

In a previous GB back in 2020 I hired a designer here for a personal theme I had created and ordered a quantity of cards mold tournament chips. Then I also got matching Dealer buttons and cut cards made. A few weeks ago another member here helped me create custom tuck boxes for my playing cards. Here's my entire custom setup. (but only some of the chips. I got 1700 total so enough for a 3-4 table tournament)

You may have no interest in these less expensive cards mold chips, but if you do just ask and I can point you to some threads to get more information.

Awesome info! I will take your advice and start a new thread when ready. Probably just going to order a custom set with CPC. I just like the feel of their clays. Pretty happy with the ceramic set for playing on the back porch with bourbon and cigars for now...

Welcome to PCF northern neighbor. I highly recommend CPC for your own custom set. Angry Beaver Lodge could be an epic concept for a set. Plenty of great designers on here who can help with the art too.

Welcome to PCF neighbor. I am in your neck of the woods at least a couple of times a month. Love the square in Celina, and several of the food choices up there.
