I would really like to start hosting cash games. Probably a $30 max buy in. Guys I play with wouldn't do more than that. Wanting to run .25/.50 blinds. I just don't see them betting $1 or $2 a hand. Is it crazy to have a ton of quarters? Looking to build a set to host 8 people on a regular basis so 300? 400 chips? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'd run .25-.25 blinds if $30 is your max buy in. I'm a fan of a barrel of quarters per player to start out but that would be the max. Could go with less than that. 100 quarters on the table would be enough.

100 - .25
200- $1
100- $5

This would most likely cover your group most nights. But I'd recommend another rack of $5's.

I agree with this format, depending on how much gamble your friends have depends whether you will need more $5's. But a $725 bank is probably plenty for a one table $30 buy in cash game.

If $30 is really a hard figure, I suggest playing limit format rather than no limit. Something like $0.25/$0.25 blinds with the small bet being a quarter and a big bet being $0.50. Limit poker decreases the effects of skill or enhances the effect of luck however you want to look at it. This will result in a slower bleed from the weaker players and more nights when the weaker players win.

A second alternative is tournament play vs cash play. Say something like a couple of $10 buy-in events each night.

The chips you will need vary wildly between those two options. A limit game could easily run on just two levels of chip (or even just one level). A tournament will need a wider range of values, though not necessarily more chips.

The key thing is figure out what is fun for your crew. It is essential that the players in general, but the losers in specific have a good time playing. This is the most important job for the host of a poker game.

I was talking in a broad sense about coming around to high end chips.. But yeah, the Riverboats are great! Unfortunately finding Paulson Quarters is usually a tall and expensive task.

That's how I I used to feel. A year and a half on here and about 3 grand later...

If you don't feel your players are willing to bet more than $1, then there isn't much need for $1 chips. If this is the case consider all of the options the Dr presented. Only you know your players. Consider 400x 25c with maybe 50x $5s for rebuys. However as others have mentioned, if your game grows in stakes, you will have way too many quarters.

Regarding cost of quality chips. Look into the China clays... They are nice, denominated, and good value. Pharaoh, Majestic, Milano, Dunes, championship poker series (CPS).

DrStrange makes a good point. Most of my friends are on similar budgets, and we always start with a €10 tournament. Afterwards we play .25/.25 big bet games and .50/1 limit games dealer's choice. Minimum buyin is €10 and max is €50. A few of my friends and I like to gamble higher and this works pretty well for that mix.

I played in a similar game ($20 buy in) and we had 200 quarters. Never an issue. 100 works too, but if you play 8 to 10 handed, I like 200.

I find a barrel of each denom for each player is the cap. Works really well. I prefer MOAR chips over less

I like the advice to play limit.

25c/50c No-Limit with a $30 cap is just too short - stacked. I play a two-bit game (12.5c/25c) and most people buy in around $50. For 25/25, I'd buy people in for 20 quarters, 20 singles, and use $5s to top off for $30 or rebuys.

If playing limit, lotsa quarters makes sense.
