Can a set be a "GRAIL" set if you have to quantify what kind of GRAIL set it is? (2 Viewers)

Can a set really be a GRAIL set if it needs stipulations?

  • YES, it is the best type of that set. i.e. grail ceramic set, grail dice chip set, grail CC, etc...

  • NO, If a set needs anything more than being called a GRAIL set then it isn't a grail set.

  • There is no GRAIL set so none of it matters!

  • I like Polls and don't want to answer the question really so I will choose this.

As the title say, if a set needs additional quantifications can it be called a GRAIL set? If you can't just say this is a GRAIL set, is it really?

I think @Highli99 has the grail dice chip set.

Also, the term seems to be used more and more frequently in sales ads. Odd use of the term imho.

Right! Would anyone actually sell a Grail? If you had to because you needed the money that badly wouldn't it be by auction then? How can you put a price tag on a Grail set?

If I found the actual Holy Grail in a box in my attic, it would be on eBay in five minutes. Same goes for a set of LV TRK’s. :D

Is this really a question? Grail is a completely subjective term, how could it possibly be anything but. My grail sets I own include players hotel, pointe afters, cap rooms, terrible secondary MOs, and quite possibly above them all EST2s...is someone really going to try and tell me that any of those are not grail sets to me? :ROFLMAO:

By textbook definition "grail" simply means something that is coveted or sought after. One persons cup of tea may simply not be someone else's

I think there are some sets that most would agree is a grail set....and there are some sets that only a few or even one person would call a “grail” set.
It’s like asking what’s your favorite film of all time. Many will choose a small group of the same films, but some people will have obscure choices.
It’s so subjective.

There are probably just a handful of true “grail sets.” The term at this point is being so overused it is ridiculous.
If I remember my history classes, there were at least 100 holy “grail” cups, and they were often traded for other goods, like bread and cheese.
Wait...that doesn’t sound quite right...

This makes zero sense to me. My favorites and my grails aren’t necessarily the same things regardless of what my favorites are.

Owning a Cali casino set in wha’s considered standard Cali colors would be a grail set of mine. I don’t consider the actual Cali casino set I own a grail set at all. Not even close to it.

I think that either something is objectively a grail - which we’ll never all agree on - or it’s just a grail to you, personally.
I lean toward the first definition, though it probably isn’t worth the arguments.

But when you suggest you have at least 5 grail sets, that seems to cheapen the term to me, if you’re in the “grail to me” camp.

It was an analogy. Making a comparison that there are some items that most people will agree as the ultimate, and there are those items that only a few will regard the same way.

I own three grails. One is my dragon/mermaid molds my father gave me at 12. Plastic at its finest. Deff a grail set.

I can think of about two more I’d like to have, other then that pretty blessed over here. Zero complaints.

I understand that. Pointing out that it wasn’t a good analogy because grail and favorite aren’t necessarily the same thing.

DDLM are my favorite ceramics. That doesn’t make them a grail set of ceramics

These threads are hilarious to me. Grail has 100% a definition in black and white. It's as if people would like to sit around on an internet forum and argue whether they agree on the textbook definition of the word  :ROFLMAO: You can agree with it or not, but the word meaning is clearly defined

Is someone going to try saying to me that a corvette convertible z06 is not my grail car!? because someone(s) else doesn't agree!? too funny.

The meaning of the word is clearly defined. How each person uses it is not.

I think they're just saying there can be a difference in perceived definitions or understanding of the definition. How a group of people utilize the word and definition in and of itself itself defines the word.

I can believe and say blue is the best color, using the word best correctly, but that doesn't make it the best color does it?

So if you say this is my grail set, because it's highly sought after and searched for by me, and the rest of the world looks and goes, "Nope", then it would seem you're describing your personal grail set, like you said.

You have a set that is of great value and importance to you, and you can define that set however you want with whatever word you want, it just means that you're using the words differently than everyone else. I can say blue is the best color, and I can believe blue is the best color while using the word best correctly by defnition, but that doesn't make it the best color does it?

My head hurts after reading that.

FWIW, blue is only the best color if it is on the one dollar chip. That's a fact!

Here's another aspect to all this ridiculousness.

WHO is determining what a Grail Set is? I can't afford a "grail set". Without meetups, I probably would never even see or touch most of the higher end sets. Kinda funny to see a number of folks utilize the term grail who like me haven't had a lot of history or exposure to those types of chips.

Lets just be honest, most folks are a car salesman or full of shit. Everyone's selling a grail set. Or everyone is sooooo happy to own this set, they've waited forever, it'll never leave. Until 3 months later when they can auction it off and pick up a good deal.

Without knowing wtf a grail set is, I would start narrowing it down with 2 basic rules.
1) It has to be a set that doesn't change hands publicly or regularly. If it's available and I can pick it up by logging onto PCF, it can't be that rare or sought after.
2) It can't simply be obtained with a large checkbook. If I can go out in the world, locate some chips and offer 100k for the set and get it, it can't be that rare or sought after.
Of course there's caveats and circumstances that would circumvent those two rules, but I think they generally apply.
