Building a new tournament chip set.

$6000 starting stack

Stack Makeup:
$25 - 8 - $200 ($200)
$50 - 8 - $400 ($600)
$100 - 9 $900 ($1500)
$500 - 5 $2500 ($4000)
$1000 - 2 $2000 ($6000)

Usually 12-20 players (room can handle 25 players) w/ 3-5 rebuys

Blinds are 20 minutes

Looking to build an adequate supply of starting stacks and have the right demons available for rebuys…

Thought about building 25 stacks and then having larger denominations to make rebuy stacks.

Let me be the first since you will certainly hear it from others, ditch the 50 (I know the 1K is just a 2X bump from the 500, but it makes more sense for the higher betting levels.)

Are you getting custom? 50 isn't commonly made.

If so, as mentioned, cut the 50. If I'm paying money, I'd consider going 500 to 2500, then up to 10,000. Sure, it's not casino standard, but if I'm willing to spend money on a custom set, I'm probably not selling it anytime soon. However, some players will probably hate it since everyone is used to 500/1000/5000.

I have a 500 chip tournament Rounders set from CPC that plays as a tournament and cash (25's play as a quarter in cash, $100's play as a dollar and so forth. This is the breakdown I selected.

Sounds like the ditch the 50 crowd is in full force. Why the 6K? Good question… We were doing 5000 w/ a bonus chip for on time and just sort of absorbed it.

Is there a better starting number? Seems like the arbitrary nature of the starting amount is tied to how long you want the tourney to run.

Is 6K alright or are we missing it somehow?

I’m on the no 50s team! I’d also do it without any 1,000s in play at the start if possible. How many chips are you doing for the whole set? An idea for a 1,000 chip set would be: 12x25, 12x100, 9x500. That’s 300/300/225 to make 25 starting stacks. Have the other 175 be 150 1ks and use 6x1k for all rebuys. Then 25 5ks just in case.

As far as blind structure it’s a steep jump when you go from 500/1000 right to 1000/2000. You could do:

Did this with my first custom set. Sucks -- players hated the math. 500/2000/10000 works much better.

Definitely no 50’s.
Whatever you do 6k or 10k I’d go with 12- 25’s & 100’s.

I prefer 10k start stacks
12-25’s
12-100’s
5-500’s
6-1000’s

I use T10k start blinds 25/50 bc I figured it was standard to start tourneys with 200bb. But that might just be bc I was conditioned to that format

If you have 25/50 starting blinds but T6k then it’s only 120bb starting stack

We’ve gone full on cash games. The only tourney we’re planning on spreading moving forward will be a monthly deep stack and we’re going to exactly replicate the T22500, bonuses and all, in the YouTube video further up in the thread.

Cash is King.

Are you in the process of purchasing a new set of chips? Or shopping at least? If your holding weekly cash games and a monthly tournament. A set chips will go a long way as far as adding to the experience.

We did make a purchase. Started by buying what we need to run the cash game.

Bought the clay premium Monte Carlo chips through The Poker Store. Made the 1000 purchase in the denoms we need to run a micro and .25/.50 cash game.

We got a sample and for the money (~.20 a chip) you I didn’t think I could go wrong. They have weight, are perfectly tacky versus slippery, stack and shuffle well, and are sharp looking. This will hold us over until we make a “real purchase.”

Because the denoms won’t cross over, I’m probably going to make another 1000 chip Monte Carlo purchase and get what we need to run our tourneys.

You’re spot on… Packing the dice chips up for the archives and playing with the new chips will take a growingly solid game instantly to the next level.

6k is 100% fine.

Great to hear! There is nothing wrong with going with the Monte Carlo's for now. A matching set with matching denominations is a huge game changer in my mind.

Over time, if your game continues, you will likely pursue upgraded quality or full casino quality chips.

From a guy who started with clay smiths, totally alright to start with Monte Carlo's. Most of my group could care less with that chips they play with I'm also on the bandwagon for ditching the 50 and maybe starting a little deeper than 6K, but you do you. Welcome to the forum!
