Hey guys,

Which would be better for a home cash set with a little bit of lugging them around to friends houses? I may fly with the chips as well. What do you guys think?

Agreed (and I have like 25 birdcages) ... my sets are on display in the cages and the cages are used when I have my in-house games. But if these puppies are crossing the threshold of Casa de Metal, they're doing so in an Apache 3800 ...

Depends is it traveling set or stationary...
And of course shape of your cabinet..

Briefcase for sure, but either make sure it’s a decent one (like a Versa) or else travel carefully with it. I have some cheap briefcases and you can’t trust the handles or the hinges. Hold it under you arm so it can’t fail on you.
But if you’re actually planning on flying with it and checking it, I think you’d either want to put it inside a larger suitcase, or else buy one of those Pelican / Apache monstrosities.

I have a 1000 chip birdcage from spinettis, I don’t travel far with my chips but I’ve never had an issue transporting them… I like the storage aspect of birdcages so much better than cases.

For sure, the best is an Apache case!! And it's currently on sale too!!

I vote for the Versa birdcage
Traveling? This!
I used this when taking 800 chips to Florida in October.

Be 100% prepared for TSA to open and inspect the case.
I put it in a sturdy carry-on for ease of transport, but took it out before putting it on the scanner belt.

When heading to FL, I forgot to take it out of the carry-on and the face the scanner operator made when it passed through was hilarious.
I called over to him - "poker chips" - when he made the face and it was the first time I saw a TSA scanner operator laugh.

On the return trip, the agent who opened and inspected the case was a miserable sob, but that said, the lines were crazy long.

I was originally thinking of getting the Versa case and transporting it inside my suitcase but the Apache looks enticing too. What size do you think I would need for 5-600 chips, 2 decks of cards, a dealer button and maybe plaques? Should I put racks inside or just naked chips? Is shaping the foam idiot proof? Thanks for the responses, guys.

Apache 3800 would be fine for 500-600 (I think up to 800) chips. It's actually a better solution to travel than putting the Versa inside a suitcase.
The loaded Versa is heavy, and you don't have to worry about taking a case out of a suitcase. You could also check the Apache depending on the chips.

Headed to Brazil in January and taking the Apache vs the Versa this time. Racks for sure when loading the Apache.

Apache monstrosities.
I beg your pardon, sir.

3800 would be perfect. Chips in racks. Foam is idiot proof. Strongly consider spraying the foam with a few coats of PlastiDip after plucked. Also consider gluing the foam to the case with 3m super 77 or 3m 90.

Plenty of pics and info here related to Apache setups.

So I really want to like the Versa Birdcage but I don't understand the point. If you can't see inside it why would you want to stack vertically?

I have one and love it. Its really easy to just pop the top and grab racks, no fishing them out of the foam.
Also, the chips don't tip on their side while carrying like in an Apache/Pelican case, the racks stay standing up. I guess that's not an issue if the foam is in good order.

Oh I see now. I've heard of people complaining about getting the bottom racks out of the Versa Birdcage but all of the racks would be like that with the suitcase style I suppose.

The bottom 2 racks are a little tight, but once you push them to the side, they pop out fairly easily.

Smaller volume. I have both styles of Versa chip cases: the 500-chip briefcase style and the 600 birdcage style. The 600's exterior dimensions are actually smaller. Space is a premium when traveling.

Wow I didn't expect that. (600 is what I would want bring)

Pelican or apache case is you intend to transport chip around but gonna be tiring
Whats tiring about it?

Looking at posts on this forum it seems I could shove 600 chips into an apache 2800. If anyone has experience how jank is it?

The weight of the case and the chip if without wheel is heavy...my setup is for 1000chip plus case and card around 14kg or so...on our shore you need to walk a distance before you reach your friend's place so kind of tiring hahaha
