Howdy everyone new guy here. not really a chip head (yet) but a board gamer. So why am i here? i recently started playing my old version of Payday with my 5yo daughter and the paper money is so bad it is literally flaking apart. So i went online and bought some History chips (200 for $15 on amazon) and of course immediately hated them. aside from being garbage, not having a 25 (or 50) denom chip is really annoying for that game. so i started researching options and of course stumbled upon this site and thus here i am saying hello.

So far i think i have narrowed down a few things i am looking for:
1. denominated (1.5.25.100.500.1000.5000) maybe 2 or 10 or 50. not sure yet
2. clear label with no flashy casino nonsense
3. reasonable value

I even made a image with the likely candidates i have found so far but if anyone has suggestions on things i missed let me know.

I showed this to my daughter and she picked our her favorites as: Venerati Ceramic, The Mint and Desert Heat. Personally I'm leaning toward the Desert Heat right now. Since i am board gaming with these and not playing poker i don't believe the extra cost of china clays or ceramics will be worth for my use.

I hear the shouts...GET SAMPLES...but when i'm looking at spending sub-$100 for 300 chips buying $30 worth of all the samples doesn't really make sense so i'll just grind research online for a bit longer and pick one.

If anyone here is in atlanta and might have some of these sets to either let me sample or buy lemme know though.

cheers everyone!!

ps: i am aware of the apache board game chip thread. the prototypes look nice but i'm looking to buy soonish so perhaps something to consider for the future.

Apache Dunes and Majestics are available now. My current board gaming chips are the Dunes china clays and they are just dandy.

Ha. Sounds like you belong here.

Every once in a while there'll be a set that comes up for sale on the Classifieds here, that has a chip count & denominations more suitable for board games than poker games, like this one (which was sold):

Some folks here, including me, have samples of some of these cheaper sets just lying around collecting dust -- which I got before getting hooked on the nicer clay chips. I have a sample of the Nexgen Pros, for example, and i may still have a chip or two of the Claysmith (Desert Heat?) and the Milano chips, but don't remember if I still have them or not. I've sent up to 3 chips inside a thin cardboard sleeve in a normal envelope using a Nonmachineable Surcharge stamp. If any of those interest you, (and i still have them), I'd send you a few for the price of postage.

i agree, those are some beautiful chips. I also really, really like the looks of the board gamer set apache is prototyping now but unfortunately not really in the price range i was looking to spend (sub-$100 for 300). i'm not playing poker with adults i'm playing board games with my kid. i expect the chips to get lost-broken-eaten-random so i'm going to keep to a budget. thanks though!!

thanks for the suggestions. looks like they will run about $140 after shipping for 300 which is more than i was hoping to spend and twice the price of the Desert Heats i was likely targeting. not sure that premium will be worth it for me and will be completely lost on my wife and daughter. i'll give it a think, but if i'm going to spend that much money i might just wait for the apache board game set to go into production as i really like the cleaner look of those labels over the more poker themed ones. cheers!

Welcome!! If you aren't overly concerned with the feel if the chip (or the weight) you can probably skip the samples, but there are members here that will pass samples along for shipping cost. I own a sample of the mints they are on one of my favorite non paulson chips although very loud and clanky. I do like the look of desert heat chips as well although no idea how they would feel but I would have to agree with you as one of the top choices.
Good luck and feel free to get an opinion any time, most here are happy to help!!

Ha. Sounds like you belong here.
ONE OF US!! well maybe not quite yet. we'll see if the chip addition really hits me once i get a few stacks in front of me and i start fiddling with them...

i'm going to lurk around for awhile but i might take you up on that offer if nothing local shakes out. thanks!

i appreciate the thoughts and opinions. i probably am going to try to pick up a few of the different type and\or weights of chips just to see the difference. just hoping can run into a chipper here locally and avoid anyone having to ship but i'm sure it will work out one way or another. i would assume the Desert Heats are essentially similar to the Mints since they are both claysmith slugged products. thanks for the reply. cheers!

Sounds like a good plan and I would assume so too, let us know what ya end up with!!!

I probably have full samples of all those chips I could lend to you for the cost of shipping. And I have a few more you may be interested in as well. PM me if interested.
