Hello! I've been lurking for a while, but decided it was time to actually come out of the shadows a bit.

I host occasional home games and am also trying to use cards as a way to get my kids to learn math without realizing it, so don't feel too bad about outfitting a bit of a budget home casino.

Just ordered a Barrington table thanks to the sales notice posted here--wanted to build my own, but after reading a few threads, realized that I couldn't beat that $149 deal with however many hours of my unhandy time, so Walmart is going to deliver that on Thursday.

My grandfather was in the casino business in the '30s-50s, so currently I'm working on making chips, mats, etc., recreating logos from some of his old casinos (thanks again to this forum for the resources to find said chips/logos!).

Originally, I wanted to put together an actual vintage chip set from those gambling halls, but quickly realized that wasn't feasible, so then thought I'd hot stamp a bunch of blanks to recreate them....then after reading a bunch of threads here, learned that also was not likely feasible--at least until CPC reopens. So far now, think my plan is to get a bunch of samples and then order some custom Tinas to scratch that inch (thanks again for making such a resource available!)

Also, just want to say that as someone who moderated hobby boards for many years, this places is fantastic. Love how it's organized, how you all treat people, the wealth and sharing of information, and the lack of drama. Well done!

Welcome! I'm curious about your grandfather's casino business so please share when you feel it's appropriate.

Welcome! Look forward to seeing the designs you use for your chips.

Some people are against China clays and some don't mind, but the new Olympus China clays are very affordable and amazing quality for the price point. Good cheap cash set :) welcome to pcf!

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

I'd be interested in seeing these!

Welcome!
I used to do a bit of graphic design, but it's been a while, so recreating these logos became a labor of love that took way longer than I thought, but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.

Here are a few printed on cheap stickers and stuck on old cheap chips I had so I could get a better idea of what I wanted to do for my first custom order--as an aside, I just have to say, I've spent the last three days playing with that new chipmasticstudio app and it is amazing! Many thanks to those that deserve it for developing that and making it available.

Welcome!

I am in the same camp with poker as a math tool. There is much more there than folks realize. Funny, I was studying for an actuarial exam a few months back (Exam P Probability) and low and behold, a deck of cards was one of the most widely used examples outside of a dice roll.

It really is a great way to teach kids math without them realizing. One of my nine year olds now constantly asks to play Blackjack--he always wants to deal because "the dealer always wins" and is already telling my friends that "the book says..." when they want to hit something like a a 5 against a dealer 6. And now that we've introduced sucker bets, he has to learn more payouts than just 1:1 and 3:2!

Thats awesome!

Welcome from texas! Have fun learning more and more. Wish I had some guidance when I was younger.
