Are chips doomed to obsolescence? (1 Viewer)

At the expense of nerding out, they played poker with chips on star trek next gen and money is abolished in the star trek universe. Horrible metallic interlocking cheap ass plastic chips. And commander Riker is considered a poker pro because he bluffes every hand.

So maybe chips will outlast even money!
Interlocking metallic chips could be argued to be worse than virtual chips.

And who doesn't love the sound of futuristic metallic chips that sound like this (go to the 46 second mark):

What's that? Get a ceramic set to bring on cruise ships and run my own game? Ok. I can do that.
I bring China clays and try to get a tournament going every sea day. Usually slow going the first day or two but then word gets around a little and it’s a two table thing by the end of the longer cruises. Once they find out they can play a $20-50 dollar tournament with no rake they are there regular.

I’m a new chipper and I am all in on this hobby. Still, I was wondering though, with the rise of virtual gaming in casinos and other factors, are chips doomed for obsolescence? Will I be priced out of this hobby soon? (As if I’m not already). Please forgive my ignorance, just seeking some sage wisdom.
It depends!! If you're serious and want chips of any kind (casino used, Chipcos, etc.), then you will be fine. If you want premium chips...then yes...as you likely already know...you will pay a premium and might already be priced out. Chipping is a journey. If you're serious about it then you already know that chip prices rarely go go down. So just JUMP ON IN MY FRIEND and enjoy the ride!!!

Casinos? What casinos?

There were three of them in my general area (60-90 minutes by car) pre-pandemic. All relatively new, five years or less.

All three have all reopened... But none have announced if or when they will reopen their poker rooms. They don’t respond to queries about this on social media. One has converted theirs to a Seniors Lounge.

I’m actually looking forward to a potential revival of some home, social hall and underground poker scene which used to be much more active in the region before these three opened.

While a lot of us have grudgingly played online instead, my sense is everyone can’t wait to get real chips and cards back into play. Some are already doing so, but I think it’s 3-6 months before I’ll resume hosting. I expect full tables.

Foxwoods and Mohegan have reopened their poker rooms. Encore Boston, the grandest of them all, has not. And reasonable rumors suggest they may not. Or if they do, it will be less than half the size it was. Damn shame. But the NH poker rooms are making bank.

I need to join your cruises

Does the cruise ship not balk at that and where do you find room to do it?
I recruit at the poker table. They don’t care. They really really don’t care. I put flyers up sometimes too on the bulletin board thingy. Usually we play in one of the dining rooms at 2:00 or so when no meals. They do all kinds of things in there, crafting and such, and we just grab what tables we need and set up.

That's because bingo was only run once or twice. Hour per hour comparison, I think it rakes.
Maybe hour for hour, sure, but I still think table games have a higher total profit per cruise.

Dammit. Now the next time I take a cruise, I'm going to spend the whole trip taking notes in the casino and bingo theater so I can run some numbers when I get back. :ROFLMAO:
