While I've never sat at a game, I've often seen 1/2 PLO spread at casinos with a $5 bring-in. I believe typical max open is $15 and straddle is $10. Wondering if anyone has any experience translating this to a lower stake, i.e. 25¢/50¢ with $1 bring-in. Max open $3 and straddle $2. Is it worth trying this out, or would a person rather just play $1/$1. If so, why is 1/2/(5) the typical spread instead of $5/$5?

I've seen $1/$2/$5 games and they usually play very deep. $5/$5 would just make it even bigger. Players are more willing to sit down at a $1/$2 game and give it a try and that's what the casino likes.

Trihonda plays $.25/$.50 with no bring-in and a $60 buy in and it plays well.

What do you typically buy in for? I think $.25 / $.50 with $1 bring-in and max $2 open would be a reasonable game for a $60 - $100 buy in.

That was my thought, to bump the stakes a bit from the 25/50 level and simplify pot counting.

I’ve believe I heard a dealer in Vegas say that a $1/2(5) is still a rake game and $2/5 would be a time charge. Makes it easier for new players to come and go without paying for time.

This is what we did for years up north except I did a max open to $4 (each blind counts as a $1, like in a casino each blind counts as $5). We done this at lots of meetups as well MTTD and WCB and it always plays beautifully. Highly recommended it to low stakes PLO players because it matches the structure they'd find at the casino.

My PLO game is $1/2 blinds and I allow an open to $10 to keep the game moving faster. Players can limp for $2 though unlike most casino games.

Post flop we only bet in $5 increments to make knowing the size of the pot and raises easier.

As @Mojo1312 just said if I was going to use fracs I’d probably just go with 50/50c to make keeping track of the pot and raises easier. And I would only have bets in full $1 multiples post flop.

We play 1-1 in my dealer's choice game. $100 max buy-in. Most common game is Big-O. Lots of action! People usually reload at least once. Not uncommon for someone to win $500.

Why not .50/.50/$1? Wouldn't that be simpler than a bring in that would also allow a player to straddle?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the max bring-in listed is assuming no straddle. If there were a straddle, the max bring-in would be $5.

This may be an obvious answer, but it only costs players $3 a round to play the blinds versus $10 a round. The game plays much smaller than $5/5.

I played some PLO 1/2 with a $5 bring in Vegas before. With the $5 bring-in, all bets needed to be in increments of 5, which made the math for computing the pot/max bet a little easier for the dealers. Spare $1 chips were not in play, except when a player was all-in.

I like the concept of a 0.25/0.50 with a 1 bring-in. That way, bets bets can be in increments of 1, and the 25 cent chips aren't really used other than the blinds.

I much prefer the $1/2 ($5) over a $5/5 game because it does only cost $3 to fold my blinds as opposed to $10 in a $5/5 as @AWenger mentioned.

Also the smaller blinds and $200 min buy-in will attract some Hold’em $1/3 players to give it a shot even though they won’t play the $2/5 Hold’em game. If was posted as a $5/5 game those players would never sit at the table.

So the general vibe I'm getting is that this is a good route for low stakes PLO:
  • Eliminates fracs from pot count
  • Having the min bring-in will lower number of limpers w/o overly affecting the stakes of the game? This should overall improve the 'skill aspect' of the game.
