I'm sending an invite to family and friends for a 20 person tournament with a T25k starting stack. I'm planning for 5ish hours of play. The bonus (if arriving early with exact change) will be T2000 extra in chips atop of the starting T25k stack.

Am I missing anything, or do any details seem odd? All of the details were put together using a mix from previous threads, the PCF Poker Set Selection Tool, and Chris Manzoni's Youtube video(s).

Is this really a friends and family thing? Are most of these people poker players? If it is a typical friends and family thing, then I would definitely go with less rules in your invitation. By putting so many rules that people don't understand, this will just reinforce with them that they don't know what they are doing, and might be too intimidated to play. I would instead emphasize family and fun in the invitation. Make it sound like a fun time that it should be, not a serious poker tournament. That's my 2 cents.

The level after the break at 4:10 should start at 4:20 unless you want a 20-minute break

Definitely! I’m revamping the invite entirely after peaking at @Machine thread on flyers. I may just send folks a general invite, and keep the above page on a countertop during play in case anyone is curious about house rules. Apprec that!

Also thanks @Geremie for catching that, I’ll edit the times for sure

Most try to avoid 100% increases between levels IE: level 1 is 100/200, then level 2 is 200/400... we have gone from 125 Big Blinds to just 62.5 in twenty minutes and then level 3 is 400/800... down to 31.25 Big Blinds (average) in just 40 minutes of play.

Most standard tourneys I have played in are typically 200 Big Blimds to start. Not saying that is necessary but in those game where we have more chips to.wirk with. A more gradual increase is typically preferred.

Example
100/200, 100/300, 200/400, 300/600, 400/800, 600/1200, and so on.

If there is fear that this will make the game run too long then we can mess with the amount of time per level. I suggest keeping it 20 minutes, 15 goes by faster than you think. Just a suggestion

Personally if it is a family game and some folks are new to the game 125 BBs believe it or not does not leave a ton of room for error, I typically try to give starting stacks of 250 Big Blinds, aggressive players will be aggressive, but more bigs gives A little more room for error as they call it.

Just food for thought and good luck woth the game sir!

I very much agree with this, my tournaments never double blinds even at the beginning. But the problem with it for this tournament is he wants it done in 5 hours and it already looks like it will go a little over. Adding a few levels puts it over 6 hours.

31.25 big blind average in 40 minutes and you think that will last 5 hours? Just because the sheet shows 5 hours plus doesn't mean it will take anywhere near that long. At 2 hours you are down to 12.5 big blinds, sure there will be players gone, but I really don't see this going much past 3 hours, Mayne heads up or 3 Handed... maybe I'm wrong but not much

Assuming 20 players and 27k chip stack and a few rebuys you’re looking at maybe 700k total chips in play. After 3 hours the big blind is only 5k. I think the 10k/20k is a good 5 hour target for where the game will end. Very much looks like a structure that will see half the field eliminated fairly quickly and then a longer final table.

This is all great input! I was hoping for a 5hr game length, but I’ll try and add some more incremental blinds in each level so it doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable (e.g. adding 100/300 on level 1, and 500/1000 on level 2). That makes sense to avoid the 100% increases.

This is my first time hosting, but my intention is to eventually host this monthly or semi-monthly. I’ll have a better grasp on blind structure after a few events (I hope at least). Apprec it y’all!

The real question is ... what chips we using?? Lol

Congratulations on getting your first game together and hope it goes smooth!

Majestic Star 36mm!! I’ve noticed some folks use larger chips for higher denoms so I’ve been thinking about eventually going 43mm for T10k chips, but we’ll see (I’m not quite ready to drop hundreds on a barrel of chips)

Everyone has to keep in mind that this is a casual friends and family game! Do your friends and family, who are not poker players, really want to play poker for five hours? Don't add too many more levels. I would also reduce the time of the levels from 20 minutes to 15 minutes.

Just think of what games people like to play casually. Nothing that lasts five hours! I like playing monopoly, but I don't want to play it with a big bunch of people at a party. Takes too damn long! Also, keep in mind that most of these people will have no interest in being turned into Doug Polk in a day. Keep the instruction/rules/strategy very simple! Emphasize fun, not poker rules/strategy.

If you wind up getting say 8 of the people back to play every other month, then those are the people that may be more interested in it, and then you can talk more about more rules and strategy. I have done this before and learned!

A big oversized chip (or plaque) is always fun, especially if you don’t get any in your starting stack and they get introduced later in the game.

It’s been great! Apprec you asking. I’ve adjusted the blinds since I got some el dorado chips to put into play, but we play once every few months nowadays. good times my man
Great to hear. Running a similar in a few weeks, where I want it to be 1. not too long that its boring but 2. not too rushed so that noobs have a chance to play. Its a balance I've been toying with, most of the tournament are new/brand new players.
