So i am really glad i found this forum. Everyone has been great so far and answered all my newb questions! Here is where i stand. I have a 1000 chip set of poker chips with the metal inlays with denominations on them. I would like to get a decent set for cash games (.25 .50 blinds) possibly china clays so i am looking for some advice. What would you recommend? Or, should just continue with what i have? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Friends don't let friends play with dice chips.

Obligatory questions: how many players in your 0.25/0.50 cash game? How much money typically on the table at the end of the night? What's your budget?

5 to 10 players. Money depends on the night and who comes. Sometimes we play $1 $2. My budget is where i can get a good deal. Don't need Paulsons but want something that is nice to play with.

How concerned are you about security? Maybe some blank Royals/Majestics with custom labels or standard labels if there isn't any concern. Do you want to stick to clay chips or did you also like any of the other types such as ceramics or plastic chips (Bud Jones, Matsui)? Are you thinking of getting a decent sized set that you'll continue to grow? How much of an urge do you think you'll get to upgrade soon after?

I play a similar game with my normal being 0.25/0.50. End of night is usually a $600-$800 pot. Sometimes if we get some of the more loose guys there it'll grown to around 1200 (but very rarely). We usually get by on 0.25, $1 and $5 chips.
100 - 0.25
200 - 1
260 to 280 - 5
20 to 40 - 25

I also sometimes (pretty infrequently though) play a 1/2 game with a different group. Being a chipper, I MUST have enough for even some of the more wild games. Sometimes it plays like a 1/2 game. Sometimes more like a 2/5 (depending on who shows up). They do 100 min, no max buy in basically.
200 - 1
400 to 500 - 5
200 to 300 - 25
Maybe some hundos

Not worried about security. Most of my friends are financial advisors like myself. We like to play and i would like to have a nice set of chips to play with.

So. Buy samples. Either way... No matter what, get some matsui, ceramic, hybrid, CC samples and really play with them. You'll find what you like and what you'll think what will work. Once that's answered, breakdowns are easy. But really check out your options before you purchase and get them between your fingers....

What are your current chips?

This is just my opinion, but for me, most china clays aren't worth the 3-4x the price of *some of the sluggers. I say this because Majestics, Dunes, and Pharaohs look great, but are really slippery. Also, they don't offer any security advantages over the cheapies.

I have a set of Monaco Casino chips (https://www.discountpokershop.com/25pc-135g-monaco-casino-clay-poker-chips-colors-p-605.html) for tourneys that I actually prefer to CC's, other than weight.

However, custom or semi-custom ceramics from @ABC Gifts and Awards, or Sunfly hybrids, while more expensive than CC's, stack better, are higher quality, and offer actual security.

Don't hate. What are you, a Seahawks fan? Still bitter about that SB win eh?
...... How dare you. The seachickens need to burn... Oh no.. this is a much deeper hate....

Much much deeper...

Lol...so i just looked at the Sunfly website. They look nice. Is there a specific one you would recommend over the others

I can do about 0.75 a chip for a 600 chip cash set of high end Bud Jones plastics from a real casino. More expensive than China Clay, but comparable to custom ceramic.
You may be able to get a Paulson set in the Classifieds for starting around $1 a chip. There was a beautiful set of BCC CDI chips recently for less than that, too.

What do they look like?

I really like 43mm Royals from Apache as a great option for a new chipper. Nice quality china clays, nice colors, and you can order blanks and have someone make a sick design for custom labels. I wish that was an option when I first started chipping. Nothing like playing with a one of a kind set that relates to your hobbies/passions. The easy answer is to grab a nice quality Paulson set that way you save yourself the hassle because it’s pretty much inevitable haha. This hobby hits hard, but if you are strong willed enough to avoid buying Paulson’s Royals are a great bank for your buck and a huge upgrade from dice chips.

If I could just win this P* tourney...

Also, if only the tourney paid out $600.
I know. I’m so overloaded on nice THC cash chips that there is just no justification for buying a set like this. I’m trying to retire lol!

Not sure if there are any sets for sale at the moment (some racks and barrels available), but Horseshoe Cleveland or Cincinnati are "reasonably" priced casino used Paulsons (THC/RHC mix). Only real down side is the lack of fracs (.25c), but you can relabel some (relatively) inexpensive THC solids and have a full cash set for around $1/chip. Definitely a step up (several, actually) from CC's. If you're looking for tournament chips, the Royals CC are way less slippery than Majestic, etc., and at < .50c/chip are pretty good value IMO (not recommended for cash games due to easy availability, even if you trust your friends).

But the first rule of PCF is GET SAMPLES, so save yourself a lot of grief and stick to that rule. And welcome to the forum! Your wallet may suffer, but you'll learn lots!
