Has there been many scams here? Does anybody have any stories about them?

Curious on the history!

This isn't going to end well.

Mostly, the stories about people that sold chips and disappear into the night without fulfilling the sale are the most common. 99.5 % of transactions here go off without a hitch, though. Buy with confidence from the classifieds here. If there is a doubt about a sale or if it looks too good to be true, check the seller's feedback and go from there.

Happy hunting!

Scams happen everywhere, sadly even here. Cant control people, only hope that you can trust the person you've not met on the other side of the key board. It's probably best not to rekindle burned fires, perhaps you can get some inside info through PMs. With some thread research, you'll be able to find info on a few unfortunate events we've had. (Some before my time I'm sure)
At the end of the day some stories dont always include all sides input. Can we ever really know the truths? Interpret what information you recieve here with an open mind. (I am in no way defending the people who have done wrong to the community here, I've been scammed myself outside of this site, it happens more often than not)

I did just get scammed. Basically the guy sold the chips to two people at the same time. The chips got sent out, just to the first person who bought them, and then seller didn’t say anything and took my cash
Two lessons to take away from it.
1: Communicate publicly in the thread, even if it’s just saying pm sent. I gave no indication publicly I was interested in the chips, neither did anyone else.
2. Don’t do friends and family on PayPal. Pay the small processing fee if the buyer demands it, the few dollars is worth the safety and knowledge you have a way to get your money back. I was a fool and did friends and family, and now I’m out $300 bucks and no path of resolution. I know it’s not the most money, but it still stings.
It’s a great forum though, and I’ve been loving my time here so far!

Have you tried to reach out to the seller? Usually if you reach out they'll try to make right if there was a genuine mistake made. If you try to reach out and get no response or an unsatisfactory resolution, I'd leave negative feedback and put it on record to warn others to not deal with the seller.

Yah I've pretty much dealt with it as best I can.
Had multiple forms of communication, been ghosted on all, mods were helping me out
Frankly, I've moved on
Now I get the fun of looking for another chipset, and my god, there are so many great options,
Being the scrub donkey that I am, might need a set that reflects that.......
Who knows, the possibilities are endless

It's a new member that hasn't logged on in 9 days

In that case....

All kidding aside, I'd send another message to the seller @jamesd57 and threaten negative feedback unless there's no refund or adequate resolution provided by the seller. Since you paid Paypal F+F you're out of luck from a legal/dispute standpoint unfortunately. That being said, I'm sure that future sellers here worth their salt won't have a problem with you paying them Paypal G+S if you explain the circumstances for the request.

I don't name names, because @RenoRounder told me not to. But if someone would like to pipe in and explain himself, I'm all ears.

Seriously, once he took payment from two members for the same set, then disappeared, he deserves to be called out. Both parties should have given him negative feedback, IMO.

If you hadn't posted this I would have, I saw mention of this scam on another thread and was hoping to eventually hear a resolution had been reached. Looks like @RenoRounder is just a douchebag:(

Solid advice.

Does the other recipient of the chips have his address, from the package received.
It’s unfortunately just the address of the ups store.

I’d be happy to leave negative feedback (even though my transaction was actually smooth) but I doubt he’ll ever dare login again. I’d more so rather spread the word that no one make transactions with the Williams family from Reno.

Also both of us as buyers were a little at fault for trying to grab the deal before we had established memberships with 10 posts. So within like 48 hours we both joined the forum and pm’d the seller. So I couldn’t even post interest in the classified thread. It wasn’t until the chips arrived and I posted mail Pr0n that James realIzed the dupe. And I had no idea because as I said, neither of us were able to post the public interest.

Im not a fan of hearing someone got scammed out of $300, but then theres no naming of the scammer... whats up with that?

I'm supposed to keep my fingers crossed, and hope I don't buy from this guy?

Explaining what happened and naming them adds transparency and lets others make their own informed decisions on who they want to deal with.

edit: And no, i dont think its enough to just say' well they wont be posting anything for sale on here again, so naming not necessary' What if that person reaches out via PM with a 'great deal'? Name them and if they have another version of events, then they can explain themselves.

I've never encountered a scammer here personally, but it does happen, although it's very rare. But if I ever did... I'm pretty sure everyone who has ever read more than 20 of my posts knows what I would do. That MFer would be put on blast with a huge thread with his name in the title. I don't put up with that kind of bullshit.

If buying from an established member, you can pretty much always buy with confidence here and just use friends & family option IMO, even from those with whom you may butt heads. But if it's from a newer member, you can always just use the goods & services option to give yourself some insurance in case things go awry.

No, neither of you were at fault. @RenoRounder is fully to blame for taking money for 1 item from two members.
