Hello my EU chippers! My wife and I are currently planning our next vacation to Europe and have decided on Prague - Vienna - Budapest for travel on March 12-22. We fly into Prague and fly home from Budapest.

Are there any recommendations of things we must see outside of the normal tourist destinations? Any restaurants we must try? Any good breweries or cigar shops you can recommend? Any local dishes that I must have before leaving?

I appreciate any input you might have, thank you!

This sounds awesome. I went on a trip a few years ago that included these spots. Wowzer the food!!!!!

Do tell! Recommendations?

Also looking for a spot in Vienna where I might find some Piatnik playing cards to take home with me!

I was on a tour that was all prearranged as far as the lodging and the restaurants so I had no input or investigation into those things.
I can say the restaurants we went to were places that I would never pick as a tourist but holy sheet they were some awesome servings.

I have been a lot of places and this is still one of my favorite buildings I have seen.

I AM JEALOUS, you will have a blast.

Sounds like a great time. I'm sure that you will have no problem finding a large Mercedes van to travel around in.

Our every other year trips are WITHOUT kids. So no big black van until June of 2020 - when we hit up the great lakes region.

The wifie and I did a swing through those same spots a few years ago. Here's our trip report blog write-ups. Mostly tourist spots but you might get some ideas from the food sections.

So it looks like Salzburg is worth the side trip? We were debating on that one, as it appears to be a 3 hour drive.

HaHa, that was part of our trip as well. Must be a pretty common route.

I am no travel guide by any means -
IMO Salzburg is cool but not very big and not a lot to see. There is a bad ass fortress on a hill, and it is a cool little town but we only stopped there during the day on our way from Vienna to Munich.
Not sure if it is worth a 3hr drive if I wasn't going that direction anyways.

Munich, that is where you belong.

It's on the bucket list. Until the kids are out of the house, we are limited to only the 12 day spring break period every other year. Once the youngest is off to college, we will have the flexibility to pick when we travel. Did someone say Oktoberfest?? Yes, yes, I believe they did.

I'll go through my notes and get back with you. We took a short trip last June to Prague. I think you will like it there. It was packed being summer but you are going at a much slower time I think...can only benefit you. I can say we stuck to the town center and walked a bunch. Great food and beer is everywhere if you aren't on a diet. I'm not sure about March but in summer on the weekend there were outdoor food vendors everywhere and a damn good rock band set up in the central square.

I never looked for cards in Salzburg, never went to Vienna. Found a small shop in Innsbruck with a 6 set ups of standard index 4 pip Piatniks so bought all of them.

I agree... very nice... depends on if you're after big city bustle and sights or smaller town mellowness.
A little of both. My wife is the planner - I vacation freestyle. I like to plan the morning and then let the city take me wherever in the evenings. A little bit of the sailor in me I guess.

Well, If your wife is tired and you want to have some fun in Prague I really can recommend this place: Link to: Darlings Cabaret
I went to Prague in 2005 with my "Bowling team"and had a lot of fun in this place. I haven't seen something comparable until now. ;)

Regarding to the food I can recommend the local breweries and their food. I am not 100% sure where we stayed, but google says, that there are a lot breweries with very good ratings. Maybe we stayed here: http://www.uzlatehotygra.cz/cs/

Good story about a Prague "gentlemen's" club as told by my brother and his friend...both ex military guys, my bro is the smaller of the 2 at 6'2" and 310 lbs. They were in, had a few drinks a couple dances, asked for the bill..no other customers in at the time. It came as something like 400 euro. My brother's friend asked the guy to bring him the biggest bouncer there. Waiter asked why..."Because I'm not paying this and I'm going to kick his ass." There was some negotiations but by now both were willing to take on the whole team of bouncers. They wanted no part of it, dropped the bill to 75 euro and that was the end of it. Bar made a very wise choice. Don't F with my bro...

I can share similar stories from a port visit to Columbia - moral of the story - don't buy the dancer a drink  :whistling:

Hm, when we stayed there we were like 20 guys and there were like 100 women. We didn't pay more than expected. Maybe it's different today, but I'll never forget these "100" women. :whistling:
