Just saw this pop up on eBay, never seen a molded stamp like this, looks like it was part of the SMCrown mold cups or something, pressed to the same depth. Anybody know what this is? @PAZ ?

I’d hazard a guess:

It looks to me like there isn’t any cross-hatching visible at all. That suggests either a special mold was made (unlikely due to the cost) or the “Chips” design was pressed in after the chips were pressed in the small crown mold. Hard to tell by the pic, but the small crowns and rectangles look less than sharp, suggesting that the chip may have been re-pressed with the Chips design immediately after being pressed in the scrown mold.

Because of the faint circle around the “Chips,” at first I thought maybe it was made by a drop-in mold piece, temporarily added to a scrown cup. But that wouldn’t explain the lack of cross-hatching on the perimeter of the chip.

Perhaps @David Spragg might have some thoughts?

There seems to be a distinct lighter color in side the edge throughout the middle of the chip. I wonder if that is another sign that it was maybe hit with a secondary die and there was a material transformation/discoloration as a result.

There also seem to be interesting stress marks on the chip that could result from the chip being exposed to heat outside of the original pressing.

I'll make a total guess...this is a cheap plastic knockoff chip like the hat and no cane plastic "Paulson" chips that always show up.

That is an interesting thought.

Is there a TRK color that this is actually similar to? I'd assume this is close to a charcoal, but am not familiar with TRK colors.

That was my first thought also - looks plastic to me. But it also looks like it was pressed twice since there are some steps on the inside of the crowns:

Looks like a compression mold mark to me -- same depth and sharpness as the surrounding scrowns.... possibly a second pressing (although those tend to obscure the mold marks of the first pressing, which doesn't appear to be the case here).

I doubt that it was pressed with scrown and then separately pressed with Chips, because the chips logo has the same offset double-press as the scrown. That would suggest that they're both in the same mold. Maybe a worn mold was modified as a test. I could imagine that a coin shape was milled out of the center and an insert added. That could explain the ridge around the word chips.

Never seen this chip or this style of chip. I don't think this is a proto type. Probably the result of someone trying something outside of the factory. Curious though.
