I got an eBay pm stating this:

It sucks that somebody sniped this lot and I had to focus on caring for people instead of devoting my attention to EBay. I felt good because I was in this for the long term and had consistently solid bids. If you haven't sent these off I am willing to pay you $215.00 + shipping for the lot.

The auction sold for about $190.

He "felt good" and had "solid bids"... lmao. Anyone who's spent time on eBay knows that there is a tendency for heavy bid action in the last few minutes. As if a "solid bid" entitles one to a win. I should apply that to poker:

"My pair of twos lost to your nut flush. Given I had some solid bets I'd feel good if you gave me the pot. No? But I was in it for the long term!"

If he was willing to pay $215 for the auction he should have set that as his maximum and it might have worked out for him. Like I'm going to jeopardize my account status by usurping the legit high bidder for about 20 bux after fees.

I was polite in my PM response to him but I'm still shocked to even receive a messages like this.

The guy is either an angle shooter or just a complete moron.

Regardless, I'd probably do the same as you and politely tell him "no thanks" and move on.

A bit of a tangent, but somewhat apropos...

I was at a table at the Wynn this weekend and one of the players—a super young kid who was a mostly solid player but also a bit of a luckbox—was getting looked up by several others at the table. He started boasting about how good he was and how he should get respect—he pointed out that he “was chipleader for a while in a WSOP event the other day.” The table was all like “cool story, bro” and he got riled up. I asked “did you take it down?” and he said no, but he cashed for barely a couple grand. Two others at the table pointed to the guy sitting next to the kid and told us that the guy won a bracelet the week prior. We all then proceeded to explain to the kid that being chip leader, while interesting and mildly impressive, is LOL if you don’t at least major cash, final table or win the whole damn thing. And it certainly doesn’t mean you’re the best player.

Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

And I’m ignoring the ethical issues in the OP as finer minds have already weighed in with what I would’ve said.

Thank you for your response, but done with eBay too many snipers and I have better ways to give my time and focus, and more valuable opportunities to spend my hard earned money.

He has given up on teh inturnut....

I personally have two ways of using eBay (as a buyer).
1. If I kinda want the item... and it is readily available, I will go ahead and place a bid for my max amount... and see what happens.
2. If I really want the item, I will set an alarm for myself to comeback to eBay to allow myself enough time to get set up to snipe (for my max amount) in with 5 seconds left.

I have not had a need or desire to investigate 3rd party sniping tools, but I know they exist.

Lol. Corresponding with a guy like this is not good for your mental health. For example, responding back to his childish and dishonest offer has no upside unless you’re willing to take his offer (which would/should throw up all kinds of alarms about your compass). Radio silence is best. Then you don’t get his v2 childish over sharing about his feelings on eBay. Yuk.

Exact same here.

Use a free service like Gixen to snipe for you, and you don't need alarms.

Manytimes you can save a few bucks by sniping vs. manually bidding your max. It also takes a lot of emotion out if the last few minutes since your snipe fires off your max with a few seconds left and there is no time left to bid higher :)

I was in a small daily tournament a few years back, about 40 people, and we got to heads up and it lasted a little bit. I had about a 2x lead the entire time, and finally took the other guy out, a young guy in his 20's. As the floor was getting the papers and money ready, the kid says to me "I was going to suggest a chop right before that last hand, do you mind if we go ahead and chop?"
This is after I've already won.
I just said no.

“Sure, I get 1st place money + x, you get 2nd place money - x, deal?”

I disagree. You SHOULD have told him you'd chop.... that is chop given the CURRENT ratio of chips which is 100% / 0%. That would be more than sportsmanlike. :ROFLMAO:

I would just have forwarded on the email to eBay and let them deal with it. I know I'd be pissed off to no end if I won an auction and then was told they weren't available. In the back of my head I'd be blaming some asshole like this guy.

Not too late

Super easy to use, works great:

So, I was going to stop bidding at $5, but after I did, the other guy bid more. Will you just sell them to me now for $5 instead?

Seriously, eBay has a pretty decent next minimum bid system in place. I've never "upped" a bid. I put in the maximum I would pay, and then check back when the auction ends. It's not about "winning". It's about getting an item you want for a price you are willing to pay. If the bidder puts in shill bids, but goes over my price, he gets stuck for a fake sale, plus eBay fees. If his shill bids put the price at or below my price, I get the item at or below the price I was willing to pay.

eBay has been around for over 20 years. How is it people still dont understand how this works?

Lol back when I joined eBay there was a folder everyday for the all the new stuff that had been listed that day. You could look at everything in it in about 30 minutes.

The same "new stuff" folder now might be what.... a terabyte a day?

Really?
He wrote to tell you that you sniped the item ?
This guy frustration make him lost his mind and common sense

I am willing to pay you $215.00 + shipping for the lot.

Um...evidently you're not willing or you would have already bid it.

This guy ain't firing on all cylinders... something is amiss...

My dad was trying to figure out eBay auctions a couple years ago and kept losing to last minute bids, so I tried to explain sniping to him. So the next auction he sat there on his phone and watched the seconds count down in the last minute, preparing to bid. My mom was sitting next to him and told him "I think you need to bid now" and he said "no, I have to wait until the end." So he watched the clock go to 0 and then tried to enter his bid.  :banghead:
