Dave's reply covers that point
That's the issue. It's not that flipping isn't something that happens daily, it's that some people feel this is more then a marketplace. So when the lines get blurred, it can let some expectations down. I've had the same battle in my head when the boat chips and BTP chips occurred.

It's a somewhat natural reaction when you are invested in the group to feel put off when someone does it.

I learned long ago doing security management, everyone's feelings are valid. You speak your mind, be respectful, and move on. I still feel that way about the boat and BTP chips, but I don't let it take over when I notice it.

It's life. I still chip. I won't buy any star or BTP chips, and that's that. But it's still just a general letdown on my side with some people's actions... But that letdown is on my own moral code, not with them (IMO).

You got a Haha smiley reaction because there is no eyeroll reaction....

I think I agree with all of your points.

Let me ask you this: if you could buy Star or BTP or Pooping Parrots at cost, would you? If yes, then assume you had to sell them (needed the money, needed the space, whatever), what do you do?

I try to buy and sell privately as much as possible. I would sell them at cost minus the mark up in shipping with the requested condition that if they were moved I would get them back at said prices plus the extra shipping. Its how I "rent" chipsets.

Both my TRK sets when sold will go to specific members. It was part of the deal I agreed to when I purchased them (at fantastically low prices).

I have sold a few chips at almost twice what I paid for them. They weren't for sale at the time, a member wanted them so we came to an agreement.

I'd sell them for what I bought them for, or near that. I never had an issue with someone making coin, but 2-3x is madness. Ask @ReallyGoodUsername . I bought a set of PSAs for a really great price. He reached out and said he missed the end of the auction and was a new chipper. I sold them to him sight unseen for a cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke. I got lunch, he got chips. If we're a family like it felt like, why wouldn't I. It would just be another set to me, but he was new and would enjoy the chips more then me.

Now if we resold them a week later for the actual price, I'd feel slighted. I more then likely wouldn't say anything because again, it's my issue, but I'd be sad that the good thing that was happening didn't keep moving on.

It's the mindset some of us have around here. Some of us are here for a passion for chips and good people. Some are here for money, some might be here for both. But when one said flares up, it can be disappointing....

Now I've had people reach out wanting some racks of mine that we're not for sale. So I told then the price I'd sell them for.... might have been rough, but they were not for sale.... But I've never bought a set to add to the markup and make a quick buck. In general, there is a caviot that if they come for sale, I get first shot at them back for the price I sold them for....

IN for 75c Asian Paulsons and back to the good old PCF!

When the boat chips or the BTP appeared, there was a literal explosion of people with the "never played with, sad to see them go, 7.50 a chip" posts which felt like people got an opportunity, saw they could sell, and wanted to make a few bucks.

Thats not people being done with a set to move on, that's people who got a opportunity at a rare set and knew that once they came active they could make a killing. I mean, heck... If I was in the same boat I'd have a hard time not tripling my money. But that has helped a part of the feeling around here die.

Some sparkle is gone, not saying it's not a great place. But this is a different monster from what it used to be or CT was. But things change.... And that's life. I'll still chip...

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I'm not currently hammered up. Work frowns upon that :)

I've made a a few dollars here and there on some sales. Mostly I lose a few bucks (or more). I wouldn't call it charitable. Just the way it is. Collecting, buying, and selling poker chips is my hobby. I love this shit. I have honestly tried to stop caring what people buy/sell for because as it has been stated a thousand times. If I don't like it, don't buy it. So I don't.
Don't pay attention to @pltrgyst sourpuss. I had a great transaction with nothing but kindness until he saw I don't make my past posts public and he abruptly ended the discussion with (can't make this stuff up):

"Well, it was nice meeting you while it lasted. You'll be going on my ignore list."

+1 on that. @Josh Kifer is a stellar member of this community and if anyone says otherwise, i'll fight'em

This is just the reality these days. It applies to any and all chips that can be bought for below market value. Im sure those people who had the opportunity to buy the coveted JACKS chips at pre sale didnt base their orders on what they needed, but rather what they were allowed to buy based on order limits....as they can always sell what they dont need for profit.

Its frustrating to give friendly deals and then see someone else realize the profits, but its going to inevitably happen at some point down the road when you sell at below market rates. @pltrgyst may have the best solution, If you dont like it, dont sell your chips.

Just to clarify

I never said I “blocked” anyone. I said I put them on my do not buy/sell list.

A little background

When I first signed up I had a couple of sales where I got taken advantage of.

First in price, which was my own fault for not doing more homework on said chips.

And secondly on the chips condition. Which were known by most members, but not by me. Again I take responsibility for that.

They could have been more upfront about condition and I learned my lesson. (Yeah I know it took a couple of times :banghead:) this was done by members in good standing also.

So I can understand superchromix feelings on this. It took me a while to start trusting members after these transactions. I think that is where @superchromix is coming from. If I didn’t have some other members that I could talk to about this I would have left the forum and not have had the pleasure to meet and converse with all the fabulous members here.

Please summarize our transaction here if you want to be up front and transparent.

Right after the Jacks sale when people were scrambling to get their sets together I was offered $30 a chip for Jack 1k’s and $40 a chip for Jack 5k’s...

Needless to say I politely declined. But still... it’s like WTF.
I wasn't mad or affronted at all but someone offering me Roadhouse 1k/5k already for trades was interesting... but then they said they didn’t have them yet..?

I'm still new here and as I've read this conversation, I hesitate to chime in for fear of coming across the wrong way but something's bothering me about all this.

Flipping is against the spirit of 'chipping' - that's well established. But it's worth pointing out that flipping exists because a secondary market develops that's driven by scarcity once inventories dry up. It's an inevitability because people here are willing to pay extraordinary markups to get what they want.

If you believe that flipping is a problem, vote with your wallet. Simply don't buy them. If the chipping community as a collective refused to pay these markups, prices would* come down. And if a pattern of unsuccessful flipping develops, they might become discouraged and if they do the problem solves itself.

*In most circumstances, this isn't actually possible. But the chipping community is unique in the sense that it's small and niche enough that I think you could conceivable conspire to control the market.

I would welcome you publishing the name of people who were ‘offering’ you those chips at such generous prices :D ... but seriously, I’d like to know who they are.

I misunderstood this, I thought someone was offering to buy at those prices but it probably makes more sense that someone was offering to SELL at those prices.

This is the most level headed and sensible comment in this entire thread. :)
